Semi auto’s reliable?… Sure they are… For ducks, geese and trap shooting…. For defense purposes stick with a pump shotgun… A 12 guage pump is always more reliable than a semi-auto…..
I own them all…. 870′s, 500′s, 590′s, 930SPX’s… and shoot a lot!…. The 500 and the 590 have been the most reliable…
If you want to know about hunting shotguns then relax… Whether you purchase a Remington, Mossberg, Benelli or other good quality brand they are all decently reliable…. For defense stick with a pump… I own many fine shotguns and a Mossberg 500 is what hangs behind my bedroom door….
yes just as reliable and i like the safety on top and they are faster to load(the mossberg). With more moving parts there is alway a chance something could go wrong(like a jam) with a semi auto but with todays tolerances it probably dont happen as much.Any time there are more moving parts there are more things that could go wrong.Pumps and single shots hit harder than semi-autos.
I have a Mossberg 500 and have put more shells through it than I could ever count, and in some less than favorable conditions. I have never had a jam of any kind, or any problems for that matter. I have not owned an 870, but my brother has one. Honestly, it’s been through the same torture mine has and never had any issues either.
I do enjoy my gun more, but I think it’s purley preference. The mossberg does have a "thumb saftey" on top as opposed to the "behind the trigger" the 870 uses, plus my mossberg has two beads to the 870′s one. Of course this was 8 years ago when we bought these guns, so much could have changed.
Other than that, I have a Franchii auto-loader and it’s great. It was resonanly priced and I never have any issues with it. However, it doesn’t have nearly as many rounds through it and has been babied compared to the mossberg, so take that with angrain of salt.
I will offer one more piece of advice, auto-loading shotguns "feel" different when you shoot them and it does take some getting used to (at least it did for me). Good lick in your search!
yes, quality is similar, both have dual action bars and both are very reliable, but the mossberg generally has a better price. I’ve used both, on and off duty, hunting and for self defense. I prefer the mossberg with it’s safety on top.
Semi autos, if kept exceptionally clean, are pretty reliable, but not up to the reliability of the pump guns.

Your question should be?…..
Is the Remington 870 as reliable as the Mossberg 500……
Both are equally reliable for hunting…..
For security or home defense purposes the Mossberg 500 is the superior firearm…. Here are the technical details why…..

Semi autos are only as reliable as you make them, clean them and feed them right and you’ll never have an issue.
And The mossberg is just as good as the 870, at least mine is.

Yes it is just as reliable. And yes again semi-autos are reliable very reliable in fact if u were in a gun
fight i mean if u had a pump u would have to jack the thing up and down up and down (Not good)

The mossberg 500 is cheaper and better.
Semi-auto’s can jam much more often.
