I have an 870 Express that occasionally (1%-2%) fails to extract a fired shell.
The slide doesn’t get stuck, instead the extractor never seems to grab the rim of the case. I’ll rack the slide back and see the shell stuck in the chamber still. I generally dig it out with a car key, but of course for self defense this isn’t ideal ("Hey buddy, can you wait a minute?").
Racking the slide back forward (when the shotgun is unloaded of course, or it would jam) will not cause the extractor to grab the shell, even if I jam it forward with great force.
What causes this failure, and how is it prevented?
Cleaning is a good recommendation, but I just finished cleaning that shotgun meticulously.
I broke down the whole thing and paid special attention to the bolt and the extractor with a toothbrush and CLP.
Didn’t seem to make much difference.
I have been shooting the Federal bulk ammo from WalMart.

i just bought a pistol grip forend for my mossberg 500 cruiser, looks great, feels great, but its a littke wobbly.. i was wondering if shooting the gun with the pistol grip forend can harm the gun after a period of time. since the grip is only attatched to the feed tube (magazine or whatever) alot of the reciol force is being put on the mag tube when i shoot it. and i was wondering if you think it will ever harm the gun. thanks!

I have read that some US states limit shotgun round capacity when hunting to 3 shells, why is this? If it is true i really don’t see the logic in being limited to 3 rounds, if someone could fill me in that would be great, thanks

hi, im looking into buying a Mossberg 500 shotgun sometime soon, and i need some help…. i was thinking about getting the 12 ga. model, however, i started to think more and more about getting the 20 ga. when this past weekend i went out shooting skeet and shot about 75-100 shells through a 20. and my should was somewhat sore, and i thought if i get a 12 it would be too much recoil. now i don’t know which gauge to buy. i would mostly be shooting skeet, hunting small game/ possibly birds, and probably deer eventually. which gauge should i get, 12 or 20 and why??? please help
by the way… i am 15 years old and about 120 lbs. im not sure of my height, probably around 5′… 5-6" tall.
thank you all for your answers. i was just wondering because i don’t know how much a recoil pad would work, but i am now pretty sure i will get the 12. also when i go hunting squirrel and such i have a single shot 20 ga if carrying around a 12 gets to be too much work. thanks again.

The football team always does shotgun. I dont understand it at all…They dont even have an I formation or normal singleback. Wouldnt it make more sense to have those because those are run in college more?

The Maverick 88 is a Mossberg 500 clone. Is this shotgun a good buy?
I just said what the capacity was. The norm is 4+1 and i like the 5+1.
The norm on The Rem 870 and others is 4+1, isn’t it?
And how much would that drilling and tapping cost? Can you give me an estimate?

I can’t help but notice that about 30% of the length of many shotgun shells, even magnum type shells consist of a wad. Why can’t this be shortened? It would allow you to shorten the length of the shell which has many benefits. Why don’t they do this?
