AK47 (romainian wasr) or 12ga shotgun (mossberg 9-shot pump)?

July 4th, 2010 by eranio

Looking for my next gun purchase, i thought these would be fun toys to have. I already have a home defense weapon and im not looking for anything to hunt with either. simply to shoot targets and do some plinking. both are similarly priced on gun as well as ammo so i was just wanting some advice on which will be the most fun

Your comparing apples to oranges here……

Anyways….. The Romanian WASR is a complete piece of crap…. Avoid….. Heres why….

If you want an AK type rifle then spend a little more and get a quality one….

On the other hand — The Mossberg 590 is a top quality 12 guage shotgun…. Arguably its one of the most reliable, heavy duty shotguns a guy could ever own….. Many folks wouldn’t exactly call a shotgun a target gun but the reality is many do…. I target shoot at steel plates with slugs with my 590′s all the time….

The shotgun is not commonly known as a plinking target gun but many of us do target shoot with slugs….

If you only have about $400 to spend and want good quality then get the shotgun…. The WASR is junk…..

The mossberg isn’t a plinking gun, the wasr could be, but ammo expense precludes a lot of plinking. Look at a Sig 522 for a high quality fun gun for plinking.

The shotgun would be my first choice. The Ak’s are fun to shoot but after a while the "new" wears off and then they get boring. They arent the most accurate so its not like you’ll be shooting for grouping. Its more of a point and pull rifle. Eventually spending ammo into the side of a trashcan gets boring.

Shotguns are versatile. You can shoot targets, skeet, and then take them hunting.

for plinking I’d go with the Ruger 10/22.
The shotgun fun would wear off quick UNLESS you are doing skeet or trap, those games are fun but you make sure you buy a shotgun with a long barrel and has multiple chokes…

The wasr-10 (stands for What A $hitty Rifle) might be fun for high power plinking from 50-150 yards, but there are other options…how about an inexpensive military surplus rifle?

the m-39 comes to mind…its a bolt action but you can get it sent directly to your house ~$400 (the antique ones) but they are still very sturdy and a collectors item!

I think everyone should own at least one (1) 12 gauge. It’s too versatile to do without one.

On the other hand, I’ve been eyeing those WASR’s too. Not as my #1, or even second option, but just for fun. God knows what reason the price keeps going up and up on those every year…

    Good luck
