Anybody have any proof that the Remington 870 Express was made to compete with the Mossberg 500 series shotgun?
Comparing them side by side I cant see it. The Mossberg has dual extractors where the 870EX only has 1. The 870EX has those little dimples on the magazine tube so you can’t add an extension without modification. aside from the aluminum receiver, plastic trigger guard and safety, I don’t see the validity in this argument. I, however, do see the validity in the comparison of the Remington 870 Express competing with Mossberg’s Maverick 88 line.
Looking for a press release, link or a market comparison.
Well, Actually I was just refferring to the 870 Express, not just the 870 itself.
The police are issued Remington 870 Police series, different firing pin, steel lined forend, R3 recoil pad, Parkerized finish, Speedfeed stock, etc. All NOT standard on Express models.
The Mossberg 590 series was the only model to pass the updated 3443G specifications with a heavier barrel, metal trigger guard and safety, magazine tube end cap, bayonet lug, Ghost ring sights etc, NOT standard on 500 models. (although a metal heat shield is standard on some 500 models)
Thanks, I guess.

Id love to give you some proof, but you already have it. I wouldn’t loose too much sleep over it. It’s kind of like comparing Brittany Spears to Paris Hilton…

apples to oranges ok

Seeing as how the 870 was around first I would say Mossberg is trying to compete against Remington

I’ve never heard either way, but I’d say 870′s are overrated. I have a Maverick 88 (it’s a cheap-o, I know) and literally everytime I’ve gone shooting with someone who had an 870, theirs has jammed. Mine has jammed a grand total of one time and I have well over 1,000 rounds through it, mostly the cheap target shells too.
Go with the mossberg

Seeing how the 870 design was around for for decades before the 500 was, I think any such comparison would be futile.

This will never end will it? Ok, I’m a mossberg guy. I have a 500A next to my bed. Mossberg’s shotgun has gone through the military torture test of firing 3,000 hi-power buckshot without cleaning. The only one to ever pass. Remington has never even entered.

This may help you;
http://www.tacticalshotgun.ca/content_nonsub/shotguns/compare_870_590.html
Quote; “Mossberg 500s and 590s are typically marketed as the "one pump action shotgun…heavy duty enough to pass…Mil-Spec 3443E, a brutal and unforgiving torture test with 3,000 rounds of full power 12 gauge buckshot". Referring to the US Armed Services shotgun selection trials that eventually lead to the adaptation of the Mossberg 590A1 by the armed forces in 1987, from what we here at tacticalworks.ca remember this claim is misleading to say the least. It is true that the Mossberg was the only shotgun to pass the endurance trials, but what they neglect to tell you is that Remington didn’t even bother to enter a gun into the trials.”
The 870 is used by law enforcement and the military today.
I could not find “proof”, however I do remember that Remington had already sold their shotguns to the military before 1987 (wow I though I was a old man then! Time fly’s) And this is the same story I heard back then on the news.
Sorry I wasn’t much help.
