Might be stupid, but now I use T/C contender 14" bbl .45-70 for the lower half of the state, and the Marlin 1895 Guide Gun .45-70 for up Nort'

One box of ammo, two great stories every year!!

1800 fps of SNOT??? oh dear!

Forgive me, while I am not opposed to hunting, shotgun seems to be the sane way.

Why would you hunt with a handgun?????

I wasn't going to answer. I understand what you're saying about people that make laws that have no understanding of weapons other than the way they appear and what they've seen in movies. But what I read in some of the previous answers just reminds me of just how ignorant and stupid city people are.

Probably because when the law was written sabot shotgun slug rounds weren't in use at the time and as you said technology has bypassed it. But you might want to count your blessings that the politicians haven't noticed it yet, they probably will come up with some sort of ban on effective rounds in the future.

Well, in Southern Wisconsin, you can use shotgun, muzzleloaders, or handguns. You can get a handgun in pretty much any round of your choosing (including rifle rounds). There are even video on the internet of some guy who had a handgun built out of a 600 Notro Express round, a round meant for elephants.

With these "rifle round" handguns, sabot slugs, and modern in-line muzzleloaders, the laws on Wisconsin are definately outdated.

I now live in Illinois, but I hunt in both. Illinois has similar laws, but their laws apply statewide I believe (I just started deer hunting in Illinois whereas I've been hunting in Wisconsin for almost 20 years). I think in Illinois, you can only use a shotgun or a muzzleloader. I don't believe you can use a handgun like in Wisconsin.

A hunting magazine did an article on this once. While I took the "research" with a grain of salt, the article said that there were no more deaths or property damage in zones that allowed all weapons (including rifles) than there were in shotgun only areas.

slider you can use a handgun in IL my dad does every year.

the law has been in effect for a long time now and even 10-15 years ago slugs were not that great about that of a 50 caliber muzzle loader so the slug manufactures side stepped the laws that is the American way find a loop hole in the law and exploit it I love this country

secondly I am not sure if 410 slugs were made when the laws were written. and if they were the smaller projectile probably made them think rifle (pure speculation on my part)

No, where I live people laugh at the idea of hunting deer with a shotgun. "Might as well be bow hunting", is what everyone told me when I was considering buying a multi-use 12 gauge (since bow-hunters get to go out earlier in the season).

.270, 30-06, .308, and 30-30, are most common up here in Thunder Bay, ON. And hand guns are only allowed to be discharged at a range, whose address is written on your ownership papers, lol.

But as far as sabot slugs go, they have no where near the deadly range as a bullet from a rifle. I learned that while studying for my firearms test.

I live in Illinois, which is shotgun only statewide. First, you are right, the new shotgun slugs can shoot at close to 2000 FPS and are not near as heavy as regular cheap-o slugs. They can travel far, but not near as far as rifles because they still dont quite have the speed and they still weigh more. And i have been told that the .410 just shoots too light of a slug too fast causing it to travel way too far to be able to use it for deer. Now with the .357, the bullet weighs alot and it shoots really slow compared to deer rifles and some shotgun slugs, like the .410 slug. Some laws are stupid, but we have to deal with them for some reason.
