Best (low cost) Tactical Shotgun?

February 27th, 2010 by eranio

I want this for home security and to just shoot. I’m telling my wife ‘home security" but I would like a tactical shotgun I can accessorize with sights, hand grip, light, etc…. I’ve seen some online but would like to keep the cost low so I can put more "Add on’s" to it. I don’t want crap either.

Also, where is the best place to shop online for this?

Thanks all!
I would like it Semi-Auto

When it comes to shotguns, "low cost" and "semi-auto" are almost mutually exclusive, especially if you "don’t want crap." You might be able to find something suitable at a pawn shop, if you know what you’re doing or bring a friend who knows. The Remington 1100 Tac 4 is not crap. Likewise the Mossberg 590. I don’t know if they’re low cost enough for you.

Skip the pistol grip. It doesn’t buy you anything and makes it easier to take the gun away from you. Most of the other "tactical" bells and whistles don’t buy you much either and add to weight and unwieldiness. Quality of the gun is more important than tactical cool factor when your life is on the line.

If you haven’t already done it, don’t forget to get training in defensive shotgun use. That’s critical. Without it, you’re kidding yourself and endangering those around you. Don’t let it slide.

Remington 870s or Mossberg 500s are your best bets, but the Rem 11-87s work too.. Plenty of aftermarket stuff.

well, the thing is about home defence, you don’t want a tricked out super gun, you want a gun that looks like it could be used for "hunting", but will still do the job of home defence, a tactical gun looks a lot more evil then a plain hunting gun to jurors.
if you were ever to use this gun you wish to get on a intruder and the police felt there was foul play on your part, a simple looking hunting gun used in a desperate moment looks a lot better for you then a tricked out, semi auto meant for only one thing, to kill people.
when you’d go to court, a simple looking shotgun looks a lot better for self defence to the jury then a gun that’s specifically made to kill people(that’s why your buying it right?), as if you intended to kill them no matter what the situation, making you look like the bad guy(even if the circumstances required it), then you’d go to jail for a good decade or so just for having the wrong gun, it’s happened before and will happen again, hopefully not to you.
my choice would be a Maverick by Mossberg model 88 Security 6 shot with a illuminated bead by replacing the old one, it looks like a hunting gun but is great for home defence, your not going into a full blown war, your defending your house, you don’t need a gun that’ll kill 8 men in one second, all you’d likely need is 3-4 shots maximum, also a pump action is more reliable and simpler in many ways(cleaning, maintaining, loading, and less expensive on parts in most cases).

An economist named Ruskin wrote "A thing is worth what it can do for you, not what you choose to pay for it." He also said "It is not how much one makes but to what purpose one spends." My favorite quote of his is "There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man’s lawful prey." When you consider that John Ruskin said this in 1900, and that it still holds true, please carefully consider if you are lawful prey or an informed consumer. Sorry to wax nostalgic on you, but you are talking about your life here, not a fish tank or a floral arrangement. That’s precisely why I spent a lot of money on a Benelli M-4 Tactical. Not everyone can plop down 1600 bucks for a defense shotgun, so while I understand price is an issue, what’s your life worth?

    I like WOP-2′s answer…..

Home defense?…. Avoid all the "tactical" nonsense…. All they will do during a home invasions is slow you down and get in the way….

I differ a little in WOP_2′s answer in that you can get top quality reliability with a less expensive shotgun…. The Mossberg 500 is very reliable and I certainly will trust my life to mine with no reservations…..

mossberg is the way to go.Ive never had a malfunction with mine. They are faster to load under stress than a 870 in my opinion and the safety on top is in the best spot it could be.They are both good guns though.Mossberg makes more tacticle configurations too i believe. If can afford id go with a 590A1.Id stay away from the maveric version i think it has the safety button by the trigger gaurd like most other brands and seems to be a cheapened version.

i reccomend supporting a local gunshop before you go to walmart or something. Support the little guy.My reason is we need to support our local gunshops because places like walmart run people like that out of business. When walmart gets their guns how well do you trust how they store them in back and that they arent kicked arround or droped compared to a local gunshop that would take care in how they handle and store their guns because its their passion. Most Walmart employees dont know about guns anyway. just my 2 cents bout that

The answers here are good. I am debating the same question, myself. I’m deciding between a Mossberg 500 (what I used in the army sometimes) and a Benelli SuperNova tactical. The supernova comes with ghost ring sights, which would make it a nice deer gun in heavy brush, using rifled slugs. While the sights would do little good indoors (home defense scenario), I like the idea of a dual purpose gun. the Mossberg is certainly cheaper, and reliable. At the end of it, check out the Remington 870, Mossberg 500, and Benelli Nova or Super Nova. The Mossberg 500 Persuader will be the cheapest, since it is available already configured to your needs. The other two would be more versatile, though. Just go to the local gun store, and handle these three choices, and pick which fits you the best and feels the most natural.
