Best Rifle/Shotgun for $1500?

My dad won his choice of a rifle or shotgun and he is giving it to me and letting me choose it. First off, with the Obama election, I really see (already seeing) the effects of his possible policies against firearms and am looking for not only a good overall gun, but also something that would become the best investment down the road. For 00 what is the best overall shotgun and rifle, taking into consideration the possible jumps in prices over the next 4 years…Thanks
It was a work incentive for sales, it can be virtually any shotgun or rifle of his choice for 00…overall gun, for deer/hog hunting, targets…curious about shotguns…

Finding something like a Browning Superposed would be my first choice for an investment shotgun;but it sounds like you need to buy a new model. Kimber and Nosler are making fine centerfire rifles that would eat up most of $1500. You are going to see a lot of AR models that are $1500 too. If the rifle were to be a hunting rifle that is going to see duty then something like a CZ. You could easily spend $1500 on some Browning models and high end Remingtons,Sako and Rugers. There are a lot of special order guns too, but again, I’m thinking your dad won something like an NRA,DU,of Pheasants Forever raffle so the choices can’t be extreme.
As for shotguns, the field is wide open:Beretta,Weatherby, Browning,Remington,Stoeger,etc. Since trap and skeet are always in style even with the "Liberal Elite" something in a specialty weapon instead of a hunting weapon would be best choice in a shotgun.

At first glance I was going to reccomend a Benelli Super Black Eagle shotgun, or a Kimber or T/C Icon rifle. But after reading the rest of your question, you may want to consider something on an entry level AR platform. As mentioned earlier, a DPMS would also be a good choice in your price range.
