Best Shotgun for a Youngster?

February 18th, 2010 by eranio

My wife’s cousin is getting ready to go on his first pheasant hunt over Thanksgiving weekend. What’s the best choice of a shotgun type for him? Single shot, double, pump, etc.?

Children’s bones and musculature is still developing. So you want a gun that won’t hurt them, and which makes hunting fun. Generally, that means a 20 gauge gas auto.

I’ve written an entire article about choosing a kid’s first gun. You can find it at http://www.the-outdoor-sports-advisor.com/upland-hunting-firstgun.html.

without knowing how young exactly, i would suggest a 410 single shot for safety reasons as well as the recoil factor. If he is good with guns, a pump is always fun to use for anyone, so maybe a 410 pump.
Something cute would be a snake charmer 410 as they are made for hip shooting for adults to kill snakes, if it shouldered well it would be a very nice size weapon for a young one. It is choked for snakes so the only question would be is it enough choke to handle trying to take down a bird. Would be worth a try i think as they are pretty cheap.
So, bottom line i would stick with a 410 for starters unless he is like over 12/13 and of the stature to handle a little bigger weapon.

Good luck, have fun, and happy hunting!
