can a semi-auto be a fully auto?

ok lets say i have a semi auto gun, maybe a shotgun, like an 11-87 or little rifle like a 10/22. is there a part of the gun that can be altered to make it a fully automatic gun? Ive heard its possible, but i was wondering what they would have to do to the gun to make it that way, and no i dont want to make it fully automatic and no i dont want to kill people, im just curious
ok did you people not see that I said i didnt want to make it full auto? i said i was just curious, i knew what the penaltys are for having one without a class 3 ffl

your best option to achieve your drem is the so called "hellfire trigger" gizmo. Not perfect, but it operates the trigger to near auto fire.

No.. i highly dought it. Full-auto guins are specially designed and would have to be made form scratch. You cannot alter a shotgun. for it to be Full-auto you would also need BLOWBACK.

Yes they can be altered. The real Question is, Are you ready to go to prison when you try it? Unless you have a class 3 liscence, It is illiegal for you to obtain, buy, sell, and own any weapon that has full automatic function. The 1st poster is right on the money however… certain firearms are specifically designed for full automatic function….example: M16A1, M60, M240B, M249, uzi’s, TMP’s, PDW’s, LMG’s, HMG’s, etc.
Semiauto technically is full auto…it is just how fast you get the consectutive shots off right after the other.

Only if you want to be fined 10 thousand bucks and spend 10 years in prison just for having one.
You start messing around inside your gun and one of two things will happen. You will ruin your gun so it doesn’t even shoot one round or you will be in violation of the law if it did work. Everybody has their own little " secret" to making a full auto but how many have ever done it?. None because it is not easily done and guns are designed to function legally.

Generally the difference between a semi auto and full auto weapon is in the shape of the sear. Semi autos are made so that one cycle of the action will reset the sear, and full autos will keep cycling until releasing the trigger re-engages the sear.
Conversions can be made with full auto parts, or grinding semi-auto parts. IMO grinding is the better method, because you’re going to need the practice for making shivs when you go to jail.

Yes, it is possible to turn a semi auto into a fully automatic weapon. Doing so without the proper federal licenses and permission slips results in felony charges, high fines, and looonnnggg prison terms.
Although I haven’t looked for one recently, you could at one time buy kits to turn a semi auto into a fully auto weapon. Buying and possessing the kit was not illegal, installing it was.
Sometimes poor maintenance or too much gunsmithing will result in a full auto gun. Watched a fellow at an IPSC match load up his .45 auto and fire off two rounds. After that the gun made a kind of loud burping sound as the guns remaining 5 rounds fired out of the gun in full auto mode. Bad trigger sear I think.

Even if you HAVE as Class III license, it will be illegal for you to alter any firearm to full-automatic or select-fire. You can not even register such guns, because the register was closed in 1986. Only fully automatic weapons in the register in 1986 may be traded or sold.
So if you’ve fiddled with your shotgun, you’d best replace the parts and discard the ones you altered.

The BATF frowns on alterations or conversions which make semi-auto weapons full auto. You’d be looking at prison time. Besides, it is a good way to ruin a good semi-automatic gun.

you should just buy a gun that is a class 3 so you can get it legally its easy

With enough cash in the bank anything is possible. For those who say things like "file down the firing pin" because they know someone who did that to turn there gun into a machine-gun…they are talking out of there AZZZ. The only thing that gets you is a miss-fire because you have now shortened the length of the pin and it WILL NOT MAKE CONTACT WITH THE PRIMER!
If you don’t believe that last statement give a gunsmith a call and ask him or her.

The answer is yes ! The problem is: You must realize how many people read these answers. In view of the many school shootings,ect. It’s not the kind of info anyone should help make more easily available on line.

You can but you have to modify the receiver (so the rounds don’t jam) and the trigger. A semi-auto uses all the same hardware beyond that point. It’s dangerous and highly illegal. So I wouldn’t even risk it.
