Yes you most certainly can…. This is completely safe to do so with that Mossberg shotgun….

I also should point out that sabot slugs work efficiently if they are fired from a shotgun with a rifled barrel…. that shotgun you are looking at has a cylinder bore barrel…. Since there is no barrel rifling the sabot slug will not be very effective, give poor shot groups and give unpredictable results….

Its safe – but not effective….. Sabots are expensive so I surely would not spend the extra money of them for poor results…..

What you want to do is shoot rifled slugs (foster type) thru that particular Mossberg shotgun…. they are designed to fire thru a cylinder bore shotgun like that…..

    These would work great!….

Look over this shotgun slug tutorial to give you a better understanding of what can be used in the Mossberg police type shotguns…..

As a side note — You may want to consider a shotgun that has a regular stock…. That pistol grip looks cool in the movies but in reality it is difficult to hit what you aiming at when the target is more than a room distance away…..

    This is a more accurate choice….. catalog # 50411

or my favorite catalog # 50577….

Also that shotgun you show in the photo has a breacher on the end…. If your not blowing hinges or locks off a door (which I might add is extremely dangerous) then all it is – is a cool looking ornament…..

If you want a little more quality then surely look over this Mossberg 590 18 inch barrel model….. Catalog # 52682

Here is part of my shotgun collection… After extensive use of each of these firearms is how I came to my opinions…..

Yes as long as the choke is modified or larger.

You can but if it’s don’t have a rifled barrel, rifled slugs would be more accurate.

Gun might explode, make sure the front sights are 3 degrees to the right

Yes, just make sure your choke tube (screw in insert tube in the front of the barrel) is the right size (modified or larger, check with a good gun store if you dont know what you have, it should be marked).

For home/personal defense I would consider 000 or 00 buckshot. One shot is devastating at close range (15′ or less) and two or more is just pure carnage. Also less likely to go through several walls, etc.

yes, but it is a waste

Sabot slugs are smaller than normal, and have a special covering around then that is designed to work with full rifled shotgun barrels, or at least shotguns that have rifled chokes.

Shooting them in a standard smooth bore with Cylinder, Modified, or Full Choke is a waste.

Get ‘rifled’ slugs also known as Foster slugs. They are sized to fit thorugh even full choke of mossberg and remington and other common gun makers (although if you have a really old full choke gun by an oddball maker, don’t shoot any type of slugs through it, not all makers defined full choke the same 50 years ago)

Second, a Pistol-Grip-Only shotgun (often refered to as PGOs or PoGo…like pogo sticks) are good for only two things…TV and Movies. A PGO shotgun cannot be aimed well, and cannot deliver fast follow-up shots. You are basically only able to hip-fire the PGO, which is NOT an accurate way to shoot.

Contrary to what TV and Movies say, a shotgun does not unleash a ‘cloud of death’ that ‘cannot miss’

A good rule of thumb is that a shotgun spread is about 1" for every 1 yard away. That means if you are shooting at a guy who is 10 yards away, and your aim is just a foot off, you will totally miss him. If your aim is just 6" off, he’ll be hit by about half the shotgun pellets.

So a shotgun means your aim need not be perfect, but it still needs to be half way decent…Unless you are close enough to touch the person. (But then, you migh as well hit em with a chainsaw)
