Choke tube to use on Mossberg shotguns for self-defense?
Assume some of the popular Mossberg shotguns like all-purpose 500 or 535 (they use Accu-Choke tubes), or 835 (uses Accu-Mag tubes). I provide the link to Mossberg list below.
My question is which tube to install for self-defense. You could consider two cases: one inside home, and one outside. I would assume the best would be the most open tube, Mossberg lists "skeet" as the most open. I assume you cannot use all-purpose shotguns designed for choke tubes without a choke tube installed. How come Mossberg does not have a straight cylinder tube with no constriction? Skeet is the most open tube.

Another factor to consider is buckshot size or birdshot size. Assume 12ga. I plan to have 1-2 birdshot shells in the front, followed by buckshots with increasing pellet sizes up to the max 5 shells in the magazine.

The choke you want for defensive use is an "Improved Cylinder"….. Its commonly called a more "open" so to speak choke…. With an improved cylinder choke you can fire buckshot, bird shot, slugs, wherever you want thru it…….
Its a Mossberg model 95200 choke on the page you listed…..

Carlson’s has a cylinder bore (.730 constriction) choke tube for $16.95. That is the most open tube you can use. I don’t know why Mossberg doesn’t sell one themselves.
Check the link below, part #12217.

You’re right that you should not shoot the gun with no choke tube installed. The threads will get ruined in a hurry.

You already have the right answers. The more open the choke, the better. I just wanted to point out that in considering "self defense" outside the home, you need to think about how you will like prison. Unless you are carrying an unloaded shotgun from your home to your car or vice-versa, and are accosted, and have time to load the gun and fire it, or you are threatened while hunting, there is no such thing as self defense use for a shotgun outside the home.
