Do some people really sleep with a gun under their pillow?

Or is that just a figure of speech?
Most people use shotguns for home defense anyway?

I used to, but that was when I didn’t have a lock or security system :p Under the other pillow though, not the one my head was on, that would require a mighty thick pillow. But its pretty much a figure of speech. Most people keep them on the end table or in their drawer.
Actually, handguns can be much better for home defense. Turning the corner with a 30 inch or longer gun can be a little tough in total darkness.
A hater of guns? That’s like saying you’re a hater of tire irons or baseball bats. Never have I seen or heard of a gun getting up and killing somebody.
To pimp: Move out of your mom’s basement, don’t take naughty pictures when she’s not home, and get a job.
To miranda: If it randomly goes off as guns apparently do all the time, or so I’m told by the media, then it will shoot sideways and make a hole in the wall, lol. It’s pretty hard for the gun to turn barrel up when your head is on top of it. I still prefer under my bed than my pillow though.

There are probably some people who do,
but it is not a widely spread habit.
It’s mostly just a figure of speech…
That would hurt if they moved a certain way, and the gun shot right in they’re head…. it’s not a very wise decision to hide a gun under your pillow.

Only those hoping for some "real" action in the bedroom…and if you need a gun, you’re doing it wrong!! LOL

I am sure most people do not sleep with a gun under their pillow. But, In some hard areas of certain cities I am sure some people do.
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
Yes,some do. I think it is odd and dangerous. The people I knew who did this were people who seemed to have an exagerated self-worth,and therefor thought they needed protection. They never had a
burgler enter their home, and they each passed away peacefully, one from throat cancer and the other from diabetes. I am a hater of guns, and am still very much alive.

Too bulky. Knife under the pillow, Glock next to the clock radio and AK under the bed.
j/k. If there’s a problem at night, I just tell the wife someone’s trying to steal her handbags. Then I’ll call the police to save the criminal.

Audie Murphy slept with a cocked and locked 1911 pistol under his pillow from the time he returned from the war, until the day he died. Many others have as well. As for me, I sleep too darn restless, and I value my life to highly. I keep the .45 on the night stand, and the shotgun on a rack by the bed at night.
shoot safe

Chuck Norris keeps a pillow under his pistol when he sleeps.
If he sleeps.

Most people do use a pistol for home defense. The pistol is usually kept in the bedroom within grabbing distance when needed. It is quicker to get into action then a shotgun, and is just more handier to use.. And there are some people that do sleep with one under their pillow.

some people do sleep with a gun under there pillow. but it can’t be comfotable
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
There probably are people that do it but it’s not a great place for it. It can get full of lint or fall down behind the matress and your head gives off a lot of humidity that is not good for guns. Keeping it in the nightstand is a much better idea.

Nah. I leave them right out on the futon.

That is a good way to wake up with a headache.

Pimpy? Meet Randy. Randy, this is Pimpy. You two are going to get along FAMOUSLY.
How do YOU feel now that you’ve helped to form the most dangerous union on YA!?
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
A good way to have an accident… Plenty of pistols on night stands. Hopefully in a safe when you are not home. No fool would come to my home at night when I sleep here. During the day, when nobody is home, that’s a different story.

I don’t know anyone that does. The only protection I have is a glass of water xD
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
I know there was at least one. I read in a news article the other day about a fellow who shot himself with a hand gun he was sleeping with.
The slant of the whole article was about how bad guns are, not about how stupid it is to sleep with a gun.

Heavens no! Not me!
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

lol i hope not, what happens if it goes off accidently..

gun under pillow is a bit extreme not to mention perhaps uncomfortable and a bit hazardous. most people who sleep near guns would keep a shotgun under the bed. But I’ve seen heavier armament than that, it goes from a shotgun under the bed within easy reach to a full pull out homemade under the bed battle drawer, one guy’s photos shows he has a CETME with 30x 30rd magazines, a handgun with 15x 15rd magazines under his bed. A bit extreme for home defense, don’t ya think? But there even more alarming "bedside armories" than that to be found online.
Only one guy I’ve even seen literally having a gun under his pillow was in in the documentary "Bowling with Columbine".
I do not sleep with a gun under my pillow, but I do keep a shotgun hidden right next to my mattress between the bed frame and the wall. Its not completely loaded (5 shells in magazine, none in the chamber) for obvious safety concerns. I also keep a AK47 hidden in a small dresser that has a closet-like area. its behind a false wall I put in that can be easily removed. Its the just-in-case-my-shotgun-breaks backup rifle. I got 12 magazines hidden along with the rifle. they’re 10rd magazines if you suddenly assumed I was some kind of crazy nut. California doesn’t allow its citizens magazines more than 10rds so I have 12x 10rd magazines. In a another state I would have 3x30rd magazines instead. Not 12x 30rd which would be insane.

I’ve encountered two people who literally slept with a gun under their pillow and a third who claims to sleep with several guns on top of his blanket. Only one of them would listen when I explained how dangerous those practices are. I hope the other two never have to find out the hard way.
A gun under the pillow, without a holster, is an accident waiting to happen. It’s very easy to move in your sleep and unintentionally pull the trigger. If the gun has a manual safety, you can accidentally disengage that as well.
I know of one incident where a man claimed he had a gun under his pillow and woke up to find he’d accidentally shot his wife. The DA didn’t buy it. Neither did the jury. He’s in prison for her murder. Only he knows whether or not he’s really guilty — small consolation either way.
From what I’ve seen, guns under pillows also collect lint. One of my students showed me one I had to clean all the lint out of before it would function properly — not something I’d want to bet my life on.
Keeping a gun to hand when you sleep can be a prudent security option, but it should be placed so you have to willfully move at least one major limb to get your hands on it. That will assure you’re fully awake before you touch it. If you’re a very sound sleeper, keep it in a quick-access lock box, so you won’t wake up to find someone pointing your gun at you.
I’m not aware of any statistics on preference for shotguns vs. handguns for home defense. Some instructors teach that the purpose of a handgun is to let you fight your way to your shotgun (or rifle). Certainly, a handgun is much more convenient to carry around all day.
In my opinion, if you know trouble is coming and you can’t run away, that’s the time to reach for your shotgun. Handguns are for dealing with the unexpected. They are emergency lifesaving equipment and, as a colleague puts it, "You can’t make an appointment to have an emergency."
So, for the rioters coming up your street, grab your shotgun. For the burglar who just kicked in your door or window, or the mugger who confronts you on the street, your handgun is more likely to be available.

* Yes many, many do just that.*
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
I don’t put one under my pillow but I sleep with one on my headboard right next to my alarm clock.
Personally, unless you live in the country, I find a shotgun too long and clumsy. With a pistol, I don’t have to get out of bed or try to wrangle a 3 foot long (or longer) chunk of hardware that requires two hands to operate while laying on my back in bed.

Outside of certain movies (such as James Bond), I have heard of anyone that says he/she sleeps with a gun under their pillow. However, if you want to find someone that does a particular thing, you can find someone that does it, if you look hard enough in a large population. So I am relatively certain you could find someone that sleeps with a gun under their pillow. However, that practice is by no means the common or normal way for most gun owners. Most people that I know that have a pistol for home defense keep their guns in their bedroom. Some of these people have cases have buttons in a shape of a hand on the top so the owner can quickly and naturally place their hand on top of the case, push their fingers down on buttons in a certain order and retrieve their pistol. Others keep it in a case, drawer, or range bag that can quickly be accessed.
I do not know anyone that uses a a shotgun for home defense. I have heard of people that do… but handguns are much easier to user in small spaces.
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
yes and no
yes it is under the pillow, no its not…
Its in a holster mounted to the headboard and slips between the headboard and the mattress.
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
Im sure some people do…. i sure as hell don’t. i have a quick safe
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
some people do, but its uncomfortable and dangerous to do that and it might be a figure oo speech. You should keep a handgun and shotgun by your bed along with other self-defense items.
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
I imagine an incredible few do… It’s very unsafe. It IS mostly a figure of speech.
Also… Take a hard-back textbook, place it under your pillow and rest your head on it… Tell me how comfortable that is lol.
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
some crazy old people
December 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
No, I don’t anyways. I just lay my head directly on the weapon.
