Does Mossberg make a shotgun in their 500 series that shoots both buckshot shells and slug shells?

February 2nd, 2010 by eranio

The only reason i ask is because I am about to purchase my first shotgun for multiple purposes. (skeet shooting, hunting, etc.) I am looking for an answer pertaining to 12 Guage shotguns only please. Any help would be nice, thanks. :) Oh and im only interested in guns 0 dollars or less, doesnt necessarily have to be a Mossberg, any good solid reputable brand will do.

    Absolutely… Yes……

The most common off the shelf shotgun for your applications is a Mossberg 500 with a smooth bore field barrel….. Most big sporting goods stores have at least a few of these in stock… Its a catalog # 50120…. Its Mossbergs most popular model….

Its a 12 guage pump and features a 28 inch barrel which is excellent for hunting and skeet shooting…. It accepts all skeet, trap loads, buckshot and with a change of the choke can fire slugs with absolutely no problems…… When you look the gun over be sure to ask the clerk to explain what choke’s are for in case you dont know…. Tell him you will be using it for slugs to…. he may suggest changing the choke to an IC (Improved Cylinder) choke…..

    Read here to understand chokes…..

Also look here at the articles concerning shotgun chokes…….

This gun is commonly available in my area at all the gunshops for under $299, usualy $279 and around the holidays as little as $239 on sale……

Buy the gun and purchase an Improved Cylinder choke for slugs… The choke tube is a Mossberg catalog # 95200 …

The Mossberg 500 is an outstanding choice….. I own several and am a very satisfied user…..

Many may recommend the Remington 870 Express…. This is also another good choice…. Look them both over at your local sporting goods store….. About $299

Don’t you know you can by another barrel for your shotgun. You can use both slugs or buckshot if you get a smooth bore. for greater accuracy get a rifled slug

About all shotguns will shoot birdshot, buckshot, and slugs. If you want good accuracy with slugs and shot both, you will need two different barrels. A rifled one for shooting saboted slugs and a smooth bore for the shot. You can shoot rifled slugs out of a smooth bore, but the range is limited compared to a saboted slug out of a rifled barrel. A rifled barrel will not pattern very well with shot.

    yeah a smoothbore version

a smooth bore will fire a rifled slug up to a full choke. stay away from the saboted slugs if ur using a smoothbore barrel because these will not stabilize correctly without rifling. they also will not compress as they pass through the choke. the rifled slugs do not require rifling to stabilize because the slug is heavier in the front than in the back. accuracy will only be marginal with these.

a rifled barrel will not shoot buckshot worth crap. no ifs ands or buts.

Just be sure to get a shotgun with screw=in choke tubes. Then if you are going to shoot lots of slugs, buy a rifled choke tube to improve accuracy.

All model 500′s will shoot both buckshot or slugs.

They are ALL capabvle of doing that. Those with chokes on the barrels will require you to remove the choke to shoot slugs.
