fully rifled shotgun barrel with rifle sights accuracy? Remington 870?

July 25th, 2010 by eranio

I have a Remington 870 express magnum for small game and bird hunting but in ohio were a shotgun only state.I was thinking about purchasing a fully rifled barrel with rifle sights for deer hunting. What kind of accuracy can I expect to get at 100 yards with sabot slugs?

I have the same gun and I have no problems with shots at 80 yards or better. I use the Remington Copper Solids mostly because if you use something else and a problem occurs, Remington wont cover the repair. I have a smooth-bore rifle sighted barrel and the fully rifled barrel. Most of the shots we get where we hunt are under 40 yards. However, I still use a scope since my eyes aren’t what they used to be.

The biggest drawback is the Remington Copper Solids are about 16 bucks for 5 shells. So sighting in gets a little pricey. I have never had a problem dropping deer with the shell however. I sometimes use the 3" mag also but does cost more and I am not sure the shell is THAT much better. When I sight it in, I can usually get 3 shot groups of about 3 inches at 35 yards. I am sure others can do much better but when I pull the trigger, I cant help but thinking about the 3 bucks I just shot down the barrel so I must shake a little bit at the thought. ( Or I am getting old)

If your worried about accuracy why not just get a cantilever barrel? You can put a scope on it so you don’t need to use the iron sights. They cost more but having a scope helps quite a bit.

    I have a 870 Wingmaster and I get a 4 to 6 inch group at 100 yards.

I would think that 4"-6′ at 100 yards would be normal. You must try diiferent kinds of ammo to see what shoots best in your gun.

I no longer own one; but, I would assume within 1 1/2 to 2 inches @ 100. (A rifled slug barrel with the proper slug can be pretty darned accurate.)

PS: I don’t like to use slugs in anything except a single shot or a semiautomatic shotgun because that sliding forearm throws me off. Neither do I like to push slugs through any sort of double barrel arrangement.

I would assume good accuracy. My brother shot a deer at 70 yards with an 870 smooth bore, factory sights, and sabot slugs; he nailed it. I have been able to hit an 8-inch target at 100 yds standing up with my benneli smooth bore, factory sights and sabot slugs.

it’ll make 2"-3" groups at 100 yards, about 4" groups at 200 yards with proper technique, it’s all about practise and knowing how your gun shoots, some people have put slugs to 300 yards with hunting accuracy, some people can’t even shoot passed 100 yards, but with practice and dedication, you should be able to achieve good hunting groups.

Its late… I’m tired…. Look at this shotgun slug page for more clarity…..

In my experience, figure about 4 inch groups at 100 yards…. Plenty accurate to take deer…….
