Guns: assault rifle or semi auto shotgun?
This gun will be for home protection and range use. I dont want a pistol. I grew up with guns, mostly a couple bolt actions, shotgun, revolver, and a 45. I never have fired an assault rifle or semi auto shotgun. I knew without a doubt that i want one before they try to ban them again. I am leaning towards an SKS for price mainly. Bjut i am also thinking strongly about an ak or possibly saiga 12 gauge. Any helpful suggestions or opinoins would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest these articles in deciding what is best for home defense.

For home protection you cannot go past the shotgun.Perfect for close quarter action.Makes a hell of a mess,so its perfect.

Get both…..
No one firearm does it all….. Get a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500 12 gauge pump…..
Assault rifle???? — What you really mean is semi-automatic sporting rifle — Assault rifles are full auto, not legal everywhere and where legal they are hugely expensive and a paperwork hassle for permits…..
SKS?…. That’s an ok choice if your on a budget — The ammo is cheap and the SKS is quite reliable…. Only buy one that’s new or relatively in real nice shape — There’s a lot of beat up junk out there so avoid those….

For defense NEVER USE an AK47 type rifle — If somebody is killed while you are defending your home there still will be a grand jury hearing….. DO YOU really want some meat head district attorney holding up an AK in front of a jury? – Probably not…. Just use a plain boring shotgun….

First a pet peeve – you aren’t looking for an assault rifle. Those are selective fire military arms. What you’re undoubtedly thinking of is a semi-auto version based on one and they’re just rifles, not assault-anything.
An SKS is a good solid rifle that’s fun to shoot and can be useful for recreational shooting, hunting, or home defense. I prefer a pistol for that last one but that’s just me.

An "assault rifle" is select-fire. That means you can flip from single shot to burst / full auto. They’ve all been heavily regulated since 1934 and thus run you 10k+ (and months of waiting for approval).
The SKS is just a plain old rifle. Same as the AK and AR; those are just more modern rifles than traditional bolt actions.
The Saiga would be a fantastic home defense tool. A rifle not so much, because you’ve got some serious penetration at such close range.
A pistol can never compare in stopping power, but it is the one tool you can hold pointed at a bad guy in one hand while you dial 911 with the other. It’s also easier to hold steady for the 10 or 15 minutes it takes them to show up and handcuff the thug…think about how heavy that long gun will get once your adrenaline runs out and you’re trying to keep it trained on a violent felon who’s just waiting for you to drop your guard.

Neither… because long guns are easy to grab in a house.
If truly for home protection, you’ll want something that you can maneuver easily. My personal favorite is the Taurus Judge – 5 shots chambered for the .45 LC and .410 shotshells. Better yet, get the one chambered for 3" shotshells.
Then have a hi-cap 9 or 40 if it should come to that.
BTW, assault rifles are regulated selective fire (semi-auto AND full auto) small arms. SKS’s and Saiga’s don’t qualify.

I just bought a Saiga 12ga last week and I love it.
I also got 3 10 round magazines for it from AmbientWeather. They were like 45 bucks a pop. Not bad considering Glock magazines are selling for 40 bucks now. I taped two together so I can have 20 shells ready to go. They do make 12 round mags and there is a 20 round drum for $260. Here is a video of the 20 round drum in action.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gESLOmz-4sc – Looks like so much fun it should be illegal.
As far as home defense, you can’t beat a shotgun. Load it with bird shot and it will be less likely to go through a wall. Fire off a round from an SKS, AK, or an AR-15 and it’ll go though the walls of your house and into your neighbor’s before it stops. God help anyone standing in it’s way. I have my Saiga loaded with 3" 12ga Steel T shot because the configuration of my house makes it unlikely I’ll have collateral damage.
Just in case of a home invasion/break-in, I’ll lock my wife and kids in the bedroom with my AR and two Glock pistols and I’ll take up position in the hall at the top of the stairs with the Saiga. If they some how get past me, they’ll still have to deal with three heavily armed people and a 110 pound rottweiler on the other side of a steel jacketed door.
If you can swing both, I’d do it. Who knows if you’ll be able to legally buy either in 6 months. Also, grab up as much ammo and magazines as you can afford. A $20 AR clip could be worth $150 on the black market in a year and a half.

Get the saiga-12(shotgun)
Then buy a drum magazine for it….=)
There you have it!
You have a home defense shotgun, a target range shotgun, and own a drum magazine, which will likely get banned!
It’s an excellent close range weapon if SHTF!
Nice stopping power!

But personally, i would recommend getting a Saiga AK rifle.
(same thing as a ak-47, just the outside cosmetics are different and it has a more SPORT style to it, and will still be legal even with another assault weapons ban…….just buy some high-cap magazines, pistol grip and side folder stock, and anything else you want now while you still can get it!)
But you can also get a regular AK-47, romanian, yugo, hungarian or bulgarian….they all shoot when you pull the trigger….not to mention the abuse they take without even blinking.
It’s still an excellent home defense weapon if you dont live in an apartment or have tons of neigbors………just as long as you dont go trigger happy to defend yourself, you’ll be okay legally in most states.
(the ak-47 uses the 7.62×39 which is really a pistol caliber, but technically by BATF standards, its considered a rifle cartridge.)
But defending yourself with an AK is no different than using a hunting rifle….except your going to get WAY more penetration with a hunting rifle.
If that’s the only gun you got….you gotta use it.
But you were mainly concerned about something that will be banned…..so there ya go..ak-47 or any other assault weapon will work fine….
I wouldnt get an SKS, they wont be banned likely…waste of time.
(although they are good rifles)
Assault weapons are getting harder to find…..theres still some websites that got em…..
http://www.jgsales.com always keeps them in stock…..get one FAST before the ban may hit. Order a bunch of hich-capacity magazines and some ammo too.
