Help deciding on a rifle or shotgun?
I’m in the market for a new toy and I can’t decide whether I want to go tactical shotgun for home defense or long range high-cal rifle for sporting. I’ve looked at the Remington 870s with the pistol grips as a shotgun and then also some .308 and .50 cal rifles but I just can’t make up my mind. Any suggestions or advice?
Also, keep in mind I need to keep it below 00 so that will probably eliminate most of the higher-end rifles.
Thanks in advance.

$2000? — That’s a lot of coin for a new toy or 2……
Consider the Mossberg 500 or 590 instead of the Remington 870…..
Here’s why….

Mossberg 590 12 guage pump… Catalog # 50645… About $450 in my area…..

You dont have to spend a fortune to get a decent rifle….. Take a look at this Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308…..

Top it off with a nice Leupold scope and you got a great package…..

Shop right and you will have enough left over for a shotgun……
I am a beer budget kind of guy and would never spend a fortune on an expensive firearm… The 2 brands and types of firearms I suggested are fairly priced, a decent reliable product and for me have been a pleasure to use….. Higher end doesnt always mean way better…..

i would go with the remington but make it 1100 with a stock. it is more natural positioning of the gun and you can use it for home defense and most all game that the average hunter would want.

That really depends upon what you want it for .
The 50 would be expensive to shoot unless a black powder
308 or 30/06 good for hunting ammo reasonably easy to get (so far)
shotgun good for defense bird hunting and survival hunting , skeet or trap shooting sport ,ammo comes is wide range and easily available (so far)

I would go with a Remington 1100 Tactical and put a Surefire Forearm grip or Remington 870 Tac-2 with a Surefire Forearm grip.

With that kind of a budget, you should be able to get the 870 AND a decent .308 with a scope. But you probably won’t get a .50-cal in that price range unless you’re looking at muzzle-loaders.
If you go with the 870, or any shotgun, the pistol grip may not be so desirable. Use the regular stock. That way, if you should have to use it in a home defense situation, you won’t look like some sort of wanna-be commando. Perceptions are important in such situations, and you DON"T want the county prosecutor thinking that you’re some sort of a trouble-seeker.

It depends on what you’re goal is with the new toy. For a below $2000 big bore rifle, I’d recommend an AR style .308. Almost completely customizable…and legal for now.
Example:

Rock River also has AR style rifles in other calibers.
Play around with some of the options on their website. Do your research for what you’re wanting. Be prepared to wait a few months for delivery of a custom rifle.
