How can I reduce the recoil on my Mossberg 500 shotgun. With my thumb over the stock, it gives me a black eye?

When I fire my Mossberg 500 12 ga, my thumb is over the stock (rear). The recoil is so fast and strong that it pushed my thumb back into my cheekbone, gving me a black eye. What can I do?

firmly plant the buttstock into your shoulder… and keep your face a bit further back until you are comfortable with how much recoil you get. Lean forward slightly as a means to further absorb the recoil…. feet firmly planted and grip the gun with a good grip
What shells are you using? #4 birdshot wont do it.. .but 3 inch 000buckshot will….. so go with a shell that you are comfortable with until you get your mossy kickback down pat.

Well It isn’t that easy to reduce the recoil. That is a matter opf the length of the barral ( No don’t cut it off) and the powder charge in the shells. (yeah you can try different brands of shells but the difference is minor at best.) I suggest you buy a padded butt plaste for the gun stock that will absorve the recoil for you!

You need to pull the buttstock into your shoulder hard when you shoot. That way your shoulder gets pushed back rather than the gun jumping around.

Ha Ha —- Thats happened to me with my 500′s once or twice…. Move your face back a little…. Also you can fire these with your thumb on the side of the stock…..
Also – what kind of ammo you using?…. 2 3/4 inch has bit less recoil…..

* Buy a Limb-saver Recoil Pad at Walmart it slides over the butt of the gun stock and reduces recoil by 50%, and that will take care of both your problems; Your thumb and the recoil.*

Make sure that the stock is not too short for you. If it is, get a recoil pad. When you fire a firearm, make sure that the stock is back against your shoulder. Make sure that your cheek is resting on the stock. If the recoil is still to hard, put a recoil pad on it.

there was an article in guns and ammo (i think) a few months back that said making the gun heavier by putting lead in the butt stock will reduce recoil on a rifle… should work the same on a shotgun but making it heavier is just that a heavy gun that becomes unpleasant to carry which is usually what happens to a shotgun. try the holding tighter to the shoulder thing, should help alot.
