How do double barrel shotguns fire?

My brother just bought a Mossberg Silver Reserve Over/Under 12 gauge, do the 2 barrels fire one after another like an auto, or do you have to switch the barrel selector for each shot?

Chris gave the correct answer, and allow me to paraphrase here…
The barrel selector on most shotguns is located on the safety. Some shotguns have them as a button behind the trigger.
Generally speaking, most folks like to shoot the bottom barrel first. The thinking here is that the recoil will be pushed in a straight line into the shooter’s shoulder. The next shot being the top barrel, which might incur more muzzle climb after firing.
With the barrel selector, you can choose to fire which ever barrel first. AFTER you shoot the first barrel, there is usually an internal mechanism (a pendulum, generally) that uses the force of the recoil from the first shot, to set the sear to engage the firing pin of the second shot. So..there is nothing you have to do to set-up for the second shot…just pull the trigger as you would on a semi-automatic shotgun. Just bear in mind that for MOST over/under shotguns, you need to actually fire the gun (have some recoil to set the internal mechanism) in order to fire the second barrel. This sometimes confuses people when they "dry fire" their new over and unders and they don’t hear the firing pin mechanism engaging for the second shot/barrel; that’s because there was no recoil from a live round being fired.

Where the barrel selector is set for s single trigger double-barrel shotgun just determines WHICH barrel fires with the first pull. The lock work of the trigger/hammer mechanisms fires the one barrel then resets or engages the sear for the other barrel and upon pulling the trigger again fires that second barrel. Some older designs and more recent inexpensive ones don’t even offer a selector they just always fire in the same order.
So you just pull release the trigger like you would on a autoloader and pull again.

if it has to trigger one for each barrels are there is a selector switch and its usually on top at eye sight
