As opposed to what some uninformed people do with their shotguns, DO NOT EVER FIRE IT WITHOUT A CHOKE TUBE INSTALLED if it has a removable choke tube. The threads in the barrel will be destroyed. If it has a removable choke tube and it is Full, you can purchase a CYL or IMP CYL for less than $20 if you look around.

if there is no "removable choke" on the barrel, it should stamped on the barrel next to the serial number, if not you can take the gun to a gun shop and they can use a "vernier caliper" to measure the inside diameter.
once you find out the choke, you can look at yahoo answers, because many T/C of y/a say you can use a full choke for slugs and others say you can’t ….good luck on that one.

First make sure your gun is unloaded, then look at the end of the barrel. You should be able to see if there is a choke in it or just a plain barrel. If it has a choke you will need to get the choke removal tool for the specific make and model of your gun. Then remove the choke and you will be able to see writing or marks on the choke like full, mod, imp cyl, steel, etc. If there is no choke tube it should be engraved on the barrel.. Hope this helps.

* Most smooth bore shotguns have the choke marked on the barrel of the shotgun. Look for it.* Some shotguns have a screw in choke, unscrew it from the end of your barrel, it should be marked on the choke what size it is.* Firearms Manufacturers recommend you only shoot rifled slugs from a Improved Cylinder Choke Only for Best Performance and Accuracy.*…

First and foremost…,. make sure you don’t have a choke installed if you’re going to use slugs. You will destroy the barrel and possibly hurt yourself if you do. Do the safety thing and clear the chamber, make sure the magazine is empty, look through the barrel, not down it and once you’re sure it’s empty take a good look at the muzzle. If there is no choke… slug away!!! If there is a choke… take it out.
