How do you shoot a jug of gas to make it explode?

February 3rd, 2010 by eranio

I saw it on exhibition shooting on the history channel and wanted to kinda show off to my friends when we go hunting this weekend. They used a shotgun and a milk jug of some sort of fuel, but I don’t know what they used for fuel, for the ammo, or the distance.
I just thought there might be enough compression if you use diesel or something, but Ive herad of other exhibition shooters doing this before. maybe they had an ignition source.

DO NOT put gasoline or other flammable liquid in a plastic milk jug…. The fuel could very well dissolve the plastic and you will have a dangerous mess on your hands…..

Do This!!! — Get a 1 gallon glass jug or metal container that has a lid on top….. Put 1 quart of motor oil in it…. Then fill the rest with gasoline…. Let it set a few minuted so it will separate…. The oil burns slower and will create a big black cloud…

Set it down where it will be shot at…. Make sure the top is screwed on…. Put a highway flare about 1 foot behind it… DO NOT light the flare if there is residual gas on the outside of the container… The containers exterior should be clean…..

Light the flare… walk back to your shooting position…. Fire upon it with your firearm… NO don’t use a .22… Use a more powerful rifle or shotgun with slugs…. When the high power bullet hits the container the fluid will expand quickly causing the container to split open via hydrostatic shock…. when the expanding fuel hits the flame of the flare there will be a big boom…..

Look at how this guy did it with a propane cylinder — See the flare?…..

Most fuels need something to ignite them. Since a bullet (or buckshot) wont do this, especially when shooting through a milk jug – you’re going to have a hard time.

You may have to have an ignition source at hand, like a pilot light…

Some of what you see in the movies doesn’t work.. I shot a propane cylinder once, and no boom, no fire, nothing!

I’m going to be very honest with you. It is a really bad idea, that and doing such an idiotic thing just to "show off" to your friends is a bad, bad mindset, especially when guns and flammable materials are involved. Don’t do it, it’s not worth starting a fire, it’s not worth getting into trouble or risking your personal safety. I don’t want to sound like a wet blanket, but it is a really bad idea. I knew from a very young age (ever since I started shooting at the ripe age of seven…), that shooting at explosive/flammable materials only leads to disaster. The people that do it on television work under very controlled, and by extension very safe conditions.

There is a safe and legal way to mix guns and explosives. It is called tannerite go to http://www.tannerite.com they have a video that tells you all about it. Good luck, and be careful.

With flammable gases you normally need a ignition source of some type. Either incendiary or explosive compounds in the projectile or a most commonly open flame or a high intensity electrical arc.

It’s dangerous to do in anything other then a very controlled environment such as in a rock quarry and where you have protective shielding for the shooter and witnesses. This is especially true in the summer when fire danger is high.

Even doing this with no flammable gases can injure or kill someone nearby.

Report Dsgkfuysgk. Just like shooting a Molotov Cocktail. It can be done but can be dangerous. I assume you are going to be doing this on your own property and the fire danger is minimal.

Not a good idea at all. It will take some spark to ignite it, but the problem would be if it did ignite. It would be like striking thousands of matches at the same time and scattering them everywhere. Instant forest fire. You wont be able to contain it.There’s serious jail time for someone that is to blame for the fire that will ensue.

This kind of activity is not consistent with any ethical hunting expedition. It is exactly the kind of idiotic, infantile use of firearms that give anti gun activists stories to support their positions. Please don’t do this ! If you insist on being an idiot with a gun, don’t do it in the context of going " hunting ".

You know, that is a very good question. The myth busters failed to ignite a fuel tank on a car shooting it several (100) times, yet in an aviation show following a scientist shot a five gallon plastic jug of aviation fuel with an air rifle and ignited it.

You need a spark or other heat source to ignite the gas. Just shooting it will not do it. Use a tracer round. The bullet will break the jug and the tracer fuel will light the gas. If you use a shot gun, cut up some magnesium from one of those fire starter flints and load the shell with that. The magnesium should light the fuel.

But do not do this. It is a good way to start a major fire as you throw gas all over the place.
