I think a lot of people are missing the words Express and Combo. I just google searched this, and new they are about $450. Some people are talking about the Remington 870, which is more expensive than the 870 Express. Some others notice the Express, but are missing that it is the combo. I don't know what it would be used, but some people aren't considering everything before giving you an estimate. As far as the paperwork is concerned, it depends on the state you are in. In MA, you do have paperwork, but MA's rules suck compared to most states.

The problem is, the 870 doesn't have that great of a resale value... if it's in what I would deem "immaculate" condition, then expect $250. Any lesser condition it goes from $200 down. Depending on what state you're in, it's just pay your money and leave with the gun (private sales here in CT). It would be a good idea to draft a receipt, and have the buyer sign it, that way in the future you could avoid a lot of legal B.S. should it be used in a crime.

The process depends on your state.

Most states allow some form of private transfer, which has the most hassle (possibly) and the best margin (cause you get all the money).

You could straight sell it to a pawnshop or a gun shop.

Or you could sell it on consignment at a gun shop. basically, you only get paid when it gets sold, and the gun shop gets a percentage.

If your state allows private sale, try the paper or websites like

http://texasguntrader.com/guns-for-sale/san-antonio.htm

Good luck, be safe.

An 870 is a common shotgun, and I wouldn't expect to get much more than a couple hundred dollars. I'm not an expert in that area, but I've seen a lot of 870's selling used around $250.

The 870 is a great gun, but its likely the most, or one of the most widely made shotguns out there. I paid $250 for a 20ga at Walmart about 2 years ago. The resale is pretty low since the cost new is low and there are many out there. Out here, $200 or less. That assumes its truly 'like new' with box, etc.

Check with your state of residence, most states allow for private transfer of firearms. If guns have to be registered in your state, it might be slightly more complicated. Try to sell it to someone you know just to be on the safe side, or sell it to an FFL dealer (you'll get less from an FFL)

A new Remington combo package cost about $350 to $400. The rifle barrel alone cost about $100 used. I would not sell it for less then $325 if it is in good shape.

Don't listen to the people who say it is only worth $250. The msrp on a new Remington 870 combo with a rifled barrel is $612. Seven years old and rarely used, I would try to get $400 for it, but would accept an offer of $375. They are listing at $499 on gunbroker.com, and that's for used/new ones. They are new, but have been taken out of the box and probably a few shells have been put through them.

Those aren't to expensive to begin with.... Nice unit anyways.... If you have both barrels and its in nice shape I don't see any reason why you wouldn't get $185 to $240.....

NO paperwork is required for you to sell your shotgun to a private person......

Less than a year ago my local Gander Mountain store was having a sale on new-in-the-box Remington 870 Express shotguns in all gauges; 12, 16, 20, 28 and 410 bore. The price? $200 plus tax.

Just a month ago I bought a very nice Remington Wingmaster with 3 inch chamber (fixed Mod. choke though) for $160 from the used rack at a gunshop. I personally would not pay more than $120 for a used Express shotgun...and another $25 for the spare barrel. That's $150 as a street price for a used 870 Express combo.

If anyone thinks they are worth more, then please feel free to contact me here, as I would love to sell you some guns out of my collection!
