What purpose are you going to use it for?….. Reason I ask is some are better than others for certain stuff…..

If this is for home defense or security work then only stick with a Mossberg 500 / 590 series shotguns….

    Heres why……

If it is for hunting then a Remington 870 would be fine…. I prefer American made shotguns so will suggest the Remington 870, Mossberg 500…..

If you will be hunting feathered critters then consider a Remington 870 Super Mag or the Mossberg 835… These 2 guns accept 3 1/2 inch cartridges for that purpose……

    Remington 870…..

    Mossberg 500…..

Remington 870 express all the way. The mossy is OK, but I like the rem much better for almost the same price.

as for bird or buck shot, what do you want to do with it? They have significantly different purposes. Winchester and remington are both good brands of shells, but there are many others out there depending on the need you have.

Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 (what ever one floats your boat, there both good.) Me personally I would like to get a Mossy sometime.

For home defense I would use buck (00) and birdshot if you want to mess around and shoot cheap I guess. Federal, winchester, hornady all make some good rounds.

Try a Benelli Nova or SuperNova

I wouldn’t take to heart ,anything that Chuck Hawk guy says (as referenced by other posters) especially "shotguns for protection".

Rem 870 first choice and Mossy 500 second. Both are good. Bird is good for HD and bird hunting and buck is good for HD if you have nobody around for .25 miles. Winchester and Remington/Federal are good and there are others.

It really depends on what you are looking for personally: what gauge, what you are using it for, what style, etc.

I have included a link to the top 5 recommended PUMP action shotguns because I love my pump shotgun! It’s a 20 gauge but I’ve taken turkeys, Canadian Geese, Ducks, Dove, Squirrels, and a few others with it with absolutely NO PROBLEMS and easy reloading with the pump action! Hope this help you out!

PS: The Mossberg 500 ranked # 5 on this list that I’ve included so I’d say you are still good to get that one but there are 4 others that are ranked HIGHER so you can check them out and see what you like best!

trust me bro, ive test fired more shotguns than i can ever even remember and i own several pump shotguns. remington 870s, Ithaca brands, winchester. the only gun I trust with my life for self / home defense is the mossberg 500 with a 20 inch berral and 7+1 magazine. loaded with federal vital-shok 3 inch 15 pellet 00 buckshot. never has jammed or misfired. mossbergs are fully customizable. id suggest you start with one of those man. as far as ammo remington sluggers are beasts, federal buckshot destroys all, and winchester turkey load makes a mean hole!

I would go with a Remington 870 I have been hunting with them for years with no problems at all. When you buy a Remington you get quality, reliability, and durability.Remington has a lot of different barrels, chokes, and accessories. In fact I think the Remington 870 has more accessories then any other shotgun. This makes the Remington 870 easy to customize to all your hunting needs. I have owned other shotguns but Remington’s will always be my favorit.

Maverick Model 88 is a great choice. I own one and it is never given me any problems. It is made by Mossberg.
