I am new to hunting and guns for the most part, I want to hunt deer with a shotgun. What should I look for?

I have to use a shotgun do to Illinois rules, I am looking to spend around 400 at the most. Everyone I have talked to has pointed to the Remington 870 express… Any opinions? Thanks

Ethaca Deer Slayer…it’s light weight, made well and a true killer in my hands. To each their own.
You need a rifled barrel. If you are not in the best of shape and plan to walk a lot then light weight. The stock should fit you well in heavy clothing. A gloved finger should be able to fit into the trigger guard with room to spare. Stay with a pump shot gun for reliability.
Gauge isn’t as important as some might swear-by. I know a guy with a 410 that has no problem bagging white tales. I like my 20 gauge because it is light and no recoil.
Don’t get an extended magazine as it only adds weight. The extra ammo under the barrel just weighs you down even more. Besides you only get one good shot. I never carry extra ammo as it only weighs me down.
You might also want to look at synthitic stocks. They are really light weight, almost indestructible, and water proof
Good luck with your hunting. Shoot one for every driver out there!.

i dont shoot shotguns in louisiana but i know that it is for short range shooting and you should probably use buckshot, you can kill a deer with any shotgun from a .410 to a 20 gauge and everything in between. Here is a link to academy’s gun page and they are one the cheapest i know in selling shotguns….Hope this helps hunt on… I

870 is a terrific platform, the yardstick to which all other pumps are measured. You cannot go wrong with an 870

if only to reinforce what you’ve been hearing, i’d say go with the 870. i’ve got an 870 super express magnum, and absolutely love it. i plan on deer hunting with it soon
