I bought a Remington 870 Express Riot Shotgun with an 18 inch barrel. Is it ready to fire right out box?
The owners manual says Remington does not ship their shotguns with the barrels attached so you have to take out some cardboard thingy before it can be fired, but mine being such a short barrel, came already attached. So, is it safe to assume the shotgun is ready to fire?

check and make sure there are no obstructions in the barrel, and remove any shipping grease (cosmoline) from the action, and your ready to shoot!

Remove the barrel and check both the barrel and breach for obstructions. Clean the gun…always a good idea on a new gun. Insert a round or two and hand cycle without firing. Unload, go to your shooting location and shoot it. If never hurts to check with the shop where you bought it.

If you’re un-familiar with the model, go to a gun store or shooting range and ask somebody for help. Experienced shooters are usually very willing to assist newbies.

make sure the barrel is clean and nothing is where it shouldn’t be. then go for it.

never assume. always field strip a new (or used) firearm and clean and lube it. Check for barrel obstruction and function. Make sure the safety works. Then take it out and load 1 round only and check the safety for function again, then fire it. If all is well, load 2 rounds and fire both off. If all is well, have fun!!
shoot safe
