I live in Illinois where i cant use a rifle for deer?

We have to use a shotgun or muzzle loader. What about different states? Are there other states where you cant use a rifle. What about states that you can use a rifle, can you still use a shotgun if you want? I was just curious, i have never been out of state hunting except in Missouri. So what state are you from and what can you use?

I’m from Alabama, and we can use any shotgun, muzzleloader, bow & arrow, crossbow, spear, and rifle. No air rifles for big game though. In some states there is a special muzzleloader season, and that is the only time you can use a muzzleloader. In Alabama, you can use a muzzleloader all through gun season, and you have 3 days (I believe) in which is only for muzzleloader. Bows (all types) and spears can be used for deer and boar all through bow season and gun season. Plus, you can take 2 deer a day every day, but only up to 3 bucks a year 1 of which must have 4 points on one side (with one exception which you only need 3 points on one side) And with a very liberal bag limit and really long seasons, it’s capable of getting a whole mess load of deer meat (venison)

For small game you can use anything, from blow dart guns, and air rifles, to bows, and shotguns. For hunting, I don’t think any other state can compare to the great state of Alabama.

I live in KS. There is a separate muzzle loading season. There is a minimum caliber, but I don’t know what it is. During the regular firearm season, you can use handguns with a case length at least 1.28", muzzle loaders with the same caliber restriction, shotguns at least 20 ga only with slugs, center fire rifles of at least .23 caliber. No restrictions on actions or magazine capacity other than no full automatic. Bullets must be of an expanding type.

I live in Louisiana and you may use anything you wish.I can only assume you can’t use high powered rifles for safety reasons?
And we can use shotguns during the rifle season.Or a bow.Or a muzzle loader. But if it is rifle season you must obey all rules for the rifle hunt. In other words if it is bucks only you have to shoot just a buck with your bow.We have so many different areas opening up at different times with so many different methods to hunt them, gun, bow , muzzle loader, still hunt only, dog hunting, buck only, buck and doe youth days, handicap days, etc. It takes a lawyer to understand it all.One area will be open for deer hunting and across the road is closed. Or will be doe days. We are issued 3 tags each for buck and doe. But on state management areas on doe days it does not count against your tags. And on private land they will issue an almost unlimited number of doe tags that will not count against your season total. Are you totally confused yet? The seasons and regulations are so confusing when someone goes to court for a violation when the judge reads the rules and regulations he has to ask the game warden to explain what it means to him.If a college educated judge, who is highly intelligent cannot understand the rules and regulations how is the average hunter going to be able to do it? But they are just looking at the bright side, such as how much money they take in from issuing tickets for violations I live in a very unique state.

In Michigan, you can use rifles in the Upper Peninsula and in the Lower Peninsula north of a line that roughly follows highways M-120 and M-20 and continues to the town of Standish. Below that line, it’s shotguns and large handguns only. You can use shotguns in the rifle zones if you want.

Drive south my friend. Ky, any centerfire rife is legal for the most part.

I am pretty sure all the southeast states allow rifle hunting.

The new plastic sabots allow jacketed bullets to fly at very good velocity, for 200 yard hunting, which is about as far as most shooters can hit well quickly under field conditions, and most deer are taken with one shot at 75 yards anyway. The Savage muzzleloader can hold smokeless powder loads, for those unlikely really long shots. Regards, Larry.
