If the purpose of owning this shotgun is for defense then stick with Mossberg only — Not an 870 — Here are the technical reasons why…
http://jth8260.tripod.com/870.html
Mossberg is a good choice… BUT avoid those tactical looking shotguns… Stick with a plain boring defense shotgun… 90% of that tactical stuff is nonsense….
I recommend these 2 shotguns….
Mossberg 500 8 shot Persuader 20 inch barrel catalog # 50577……

or the Mossberg 500 6 shot Cruiser catalog # 50411….

If the one in a million chance came up you had to defend your family with a shotgun and a serious injury or death is involved there will surely be a grand jury hearing to determine if you will be charged or if what you did was justifiable…. Do You really want some meat-head District Attorney holding up a "tactical" looking shotgun in front of a Grand Jury?…..
Keep it simple — A regular stock Mossberg 500 with no bells and whistles is best….. That tactical stuff that is real popular these days has questionable usefulness…….

The three-shot limit is only applicable to migratory waterfowl and other game birds. You can remove the magazine plug and put in the other three rounds for deer and other ground animals.
But that muzzle device isn’t necessary for home defense, and may in fact be used by a prosecutor or plaintiff’s attorney to try to make you look like some sort of Rambo wanna-be if you ever do have to shoot an intruder.
And that lack of a butt stock will make the gun harder to aim well.
You’d be better served with a standard Mossberg 500, 18.5" cylinder bore barrel, with a full stock.

the mossberg 500 and 590 is a fine shotgun. Stay away from pistol grip only models, and anything with a funky muzzlebreak or pointy flash suppessor type thingie, that is pure marketing wiz-bang gizmos to wow the kids who learn about guns through videogames.
The model you link is a decent choice. Of all the folding stocks, I think that one is the most stable, but IMHO it still isn’t as good as a standard straight stock.
Also, be aware, if you ever DO use the shotgun for home defense, the media will portray it as an evil street sweeper tool of death belonging to a gun nut because it is all black and tactical with a shell holder.
for that reason I would recommend this or this

honestly, best would be this

then in addition get

It is real easy to swap barrels. Leave the short barrel on except when you go hunting. The gun will still have a 5 shot capacity (6 if you have a round chambered…which is how your linked gun gets it’s 6 capacity) for home defense, and the combo of blue and wood makes it look less menacing to the jury. For most upland bird hunting 5 shells is fine. Only for migratory birds (ducks and geese) are you restricted to 3…and then the gun comes with a part you put inside to restrict it to 3 shots. (actually, you probably have to take the gun apart and take that part out…it is easy to do….as it will be factory installed. It’s designed to come out pretty easy)
If you truely want a ‘combat shotgun’ this model is hard to beat

Yes, it is a decent gun. Of course, just about any shotgun used for home defense will get the job done.

Yes. This is an excellent shotgun.
I own the Mossberg 500 tactical cruiser.

I am a long time Alaskan hunter and trapper.
For the past 20 years I have used a Mossburg 500 as my trapline and home defense shotgun. It has thousands of rough miles on it strapped to a horse, atv and snowmachine in rain, snow, salt water and temps to -65F below – and hundreds of rounds through it training my three boys and other shooters. I have not had to replace one part.
I do not own another firearm that has taken this abuse, cost so little, and had needed so little maintenance…….. and it works every time.
Love the 500.
Hope this helps
