I’m interested in buying a shotgun for home protection. Which should I buy?
Looking for info on brand names, how much I should pay, where to buy, etc. Not really interested in buying a handgun because you can’t use that for hunting too, and I might want to get back into hunting, which I haven’t done in about 20 years.

The Mossberg 500 12 gauge shotgun….. Specifically the Persuader / Cruiser models…..
http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.asp?id=5§ion=products
These are much more reliable than the 870….. Sure the 870 is great for ducks but forget it in a gunfight….
The safety switch and slide action switch are in un-ergonomically located positions…. In an emergency if a cartridge fails to fire in a Remington 870 you have to remove your finger from the trigger the actuate the slide switch… Not so with a Mossberg 500… Mossberg shotguns are used by the military… Remington’s are not up to the task…

I would go for a Remington 870. There are a lot of different parts that you can use to turn it into a ‘tactical’ shotgun, useful for both home defense and hunting.

Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500. Both are less than $300 and have a lot of accessories available for them. Price will vary depending on barrel length, magazine capacity, stock style(shoulder, pistol grip) and finish(wood, camo. Black)
Anywhere that sells them is a good place to buy. A guns a gun, doesn’t matter who sells it unless its out of the trunk of a car or in a dark alley.
Some places will probably try to show you the more expensive beretta or beneli but those cost so much I would be afraid to scratch it.
Also keep in mind that pistol grip is not good for hunting.

How much are you looking to spend?
So far as pump actions are concerned you cant beat the reliability and value of the Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500. I prefer the 500 as the action is smoother and I find the large thumb safety much more easy to flick off. Both models can be had for under $300 NIB if you shop around a bit.. and both are of the highest quality.
There are a number of configurations for both of these. You can buy a Mossberg persuader for around $300 that comes with both a regular stock and a pistol grip so you could change out.. one to make the gun shorter for home defense and one for precision aiming in the field. The accessories for these two models are endless!

I’m no expert on guns (but I know my fair share), but I would say a Mossberg 500. They’re pretty common, you can get them at most sporting good stores.

i would say to look into a remington 870, i have one and well i love and you can get so many different Accessories for them adn the gun its self is remotely inexpensive in comparison to guns that are up to equal quality.

Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag 12 gauge. That is what I have and it has never failed me. $341 I paid for it three years ago.

I see many answers but no one mentioned the lowly 410 shot gun. It’s light inexpensive to shoot, has no recoil, you can shoot it with one hand & at 10-20 ft it hits as hard as a 44 magnum. It’s available in single shot , dbl barrel (side by side or over & under) pump ,& I’ve even seen a saiga semi-auto tactical clip fed. Loads are available from slug to #12 bird shot but for defense 00 buck shot rules. Your wife ,girlfriend significant other wouldn’t have a problem firing it either if need be.

I like my Mossberg 500 pump. I have a short barrel for the house and a long barrel for hunting. The Remington should be good too, but being a lefty, I prefer the ambidextrous safety on the Mossberg. Walmart or maybe even Dick’s Sporting Goods should have a decent price on one.

remington 870 for sure…. they use all steel, unlike a mossberg
check this link, bottom right, the XCS line
the marine magnum is the shortest and holds 7 rounds, with equal care it would outlast all others and is the most durable, and rugged, especially a pump action…. the remington 870 has been around the longest and stood the test of time
mossbergs are blued and remington has a special corrosion resistant finish
http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model_870/
the XCS can shoot 2 3/4 rounds up to 3 1/2 magnums, but not the marine mag, it goes up to 3"
the mossberg is a close second. the military looks at quality as well as cost
