The two Im looking at are the TRISTAR tactical shotgun with folding stock for 300.00 or the Mossburg 500 persuader for 329.00 plus tax. Any information would be great.

Mossberg 500 — They are reliable and always work…….

Forget the folding stocks or any other tactical nonsense — That stuff gets in the way and provides NO tactical advantage…….

Some will recommend the Remington – great for ducks, forget for defense…. Read here why…..

And to the guy that recommended Benelli? — Forget that — Its over priced, not made in USA and I don’t care what trials its been thru a pump action shotgun will always be more reliable and easy to unjam……..

The Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870 are the universal standards in quality, durability, availability of parts and accessories and performance. Select one of these and you will be making the right choice.

The Winchester 1200/1300 series used to be in this elite club and you can still find many used ones, but I cannot recommend anything new today that bears the Winchester name. The company ceased to exist a couple years back and the people who own the name now have no credibility.

The same goes if you chose to select one of those guns in a format more suitable to specialized needs, such as length of barrel or stock configuration (as you call it "tactical").

I spent a good long while looking at all the tactical shotguns out there. Both of those are fine weapons. I decided on the Benelli Supernova tactical with pistol grips. I really love that it has both the pistol grip and the buttstock so you can choose to shoot it like a conventional shotgun or more like a pistol, although I usually use both at the same time. Honestly, pump shotguns for the most part entirely reliable. Its not like the semiautomatic pistol world where there are real lemons around. I ended up spending more like $550 on mine plus all the state fees/taxes/and such. And even though I’m ver grateful to have this shotgun (I think it just looks sexy, and it feels great to shoot), my best advice is to hold them all, rack them all, dry fire them all, until you land on one that just sits in your shoulder the best.

The poster above me is right in one thing though, parts and aftermarket accessories for both Mossbergs and Remingtons are more readily available than for other brands. But I would dispute entirely that they are more reliable than other brands, such as benelli.

I haven’t heard anything bad about the TRISTAR shotguns. From what people have been saying it seems like they might be a decent tactical shotgun for the money. However, that being said I think you should know that no one in the history of buying tactical shotguns has ever GONE WRONG buying a mossberg 500 or a mossberg 590. And if you are going to make it tacticool you will most likely have more luck finding parts and accessories for the mossberg.

The Mossberg 500 combo is the best you can get. And, it’s cheap and easy to modify for home defense.

Depends…you want to look cool or have a real self defense shotgun?

Any good quality pump gun can be shortened to 18 inches …We carried Remington 870′s for years… perfect action… reliable as anything.

You can find a beater 870 cheap… have it cut to riot length as still have money for the tatical stuff if you want to go that route.

My tactical shotgun… a 18.5" HR 401 with a butt cuff ammo carrier and a sling. Wooden stock makes a good club if the 00 doesnt get the job done… and the action is all forged and machined steel… wont jam wont twist and smooth as silk.
    About $100 invested.

I’ve never heard of Tristar, but I know Mossberg’s are good guns though. I’d also like to recommend the Remington 870 Express Magnum to you. It seems like I say this a lot, but Dollar for dollar it’s the best pump action shotgun out there, in my opinion. Right now, I have mine set up for home defense too, but the list of aftermarket barrels fore-grips, butt-stocks, sights, and other accessories is almost endless!
Well, I hope you’ll at least consider the 870, before you buy anything.
    Good Luck!

I prefer the Mossberg, but honestly, because I think the tang safety is better located for "tactical" situation than a bolt safety as on the Remington. Cost was a little more attactive also.
