Is putting a tactical pistol grip stock on a semi auto shotgun legal?

November 24th, 2009 by eranio

I am interested in getting a shotgun for hunting but would also like to deck it out for home defense/tactical look and feel when not hunting with it. I can choose between a pump and semi auto but according the the BATFE, I know it has to be at least 26 inches, but I cannot seem to find anything in the regs at the ATF’s website that isnt convoluted. So, does anyone know if a semi auto shotgun equipped with a pistol grip tactical stock(not folding or telescoping and not pistol grip only). is classified as a destructive device falling under class3 weapons?

PS I live in Arizona so state regulations are pretty much identical to federal regulations.
Again, is it a semi auto where I will run into the problem; I know they are legal with pumps, I owned a mossberg 500A that I put a tactical stock on. somewhere I remember seeing that if you put a pistol grip style of stock on a semi auto it would be classified as a NFA destructive device along with the street sweeper and the SPAS12. I’ve never seen a pistol grip semi auto shotgun that didnt require you filling out a form4 but they were the afore mentioned models.

As long as the overall length stays over 26" you are fine. Remington, Mossberg, and Benelli all offer shotguns with pistol grip type stocks (fixed shoulder stock w/pistol grip). They stocks themselves are widely available and are perfectly legal under federal and AZ state laws. Some states have different laws on them but no problems in AZ.

Yes, it is legal. As mentioned so long as the overall length is at least 26 inch.

But you mentioned for both home defense and hunting?

If so then really should consider a retractable stock. Gives you the best of both worlds with your gun. And you can certainly buy the kick a— looking assault types that will compliment your weapon. Especially if you install a nice matching forearm (perhaps a pistol grip type)

Next time your in a gun shop- take a look at the accessories available for the Mossberg 500 series

Take a look at the Mossberg 835 Tactical Turkey. It is all that and a bag o’ chips. Adjustable stock, hand grip for the pump, pistol grip, and camo’s out. Hunting or home defense….
