Model 500 and 590 shotguns have been adopted by the U.S. Military as combat shotguns. They are the ONLY pump guns to pass the Mil-Spec 3443 requirements. To pass these tests, guns were frozen, baked, and dropped to test safety, function and durability. Parts interchangeability is mandated. And the guns had to pass a 3000 round buckshot endurance test. I own a mossbeg 500A and use it as my main home defense weapon.

It’s a very good shotgun: every bit as good as the Remmy 870, regardless of what the others might "think". It’ll never leave you stranded, and will function as long as you can still bring it up to your shoulder and shoot it.
One problem though… It’s not an Ithaca (:neener:)

do you have a 500? Does it serve you well? if you are buying one fit is most important. does it feel like it fits? do more than hear look to someone who has one if you can. Jesse

I did have a 500 Mossberg I had a feeding problem with mine. I sold it to a friends son he changed ammo and had no more problem. I was using Winchester 3 In coppers buck shot. My friends some loves it and has had NO PROBLEMS SINCE THE AMMO CHANGE.

I have several shotguns,12 and 20 ga. I love my Mossberg 500 the best. It’s light to carry, easy to keep clean and 100% reliable.I just picked up a 2nd 500 (uesd) to convert for home protection…this alone should explain why I like and trust the Mossberg 500.Are there better shotguns…yes, but for my use it’s suits me perfect.

well if it’s good enough for our boys to shoot some taliban with in some of the harshest conditions in the world guess its okay for you to use for home defense/hunting.

I have had my mossberg 500a for 20 years and have fired every thing it will chamber and has not failed me it only has an 18 in. barrel but it’s what I carried to go find wounded bears with, or crawl through elk tunnels south of Pee Ell she is a fine weapon and has served me well!
