Is the Mossberg 535 a good shotgun for home defense?
My dad bought me this 12 gauge Mossberg 535 last weekend for my birthday. We plan on hunting turkey with it this fall.
He also bought me two boxes of Winchester Supreme 3 1/2" Turkey loads for this shotgun.
Will the 3 1/2" Turkey load be great for self defense also?

Good choice of shotgun firstly. The 535 is reliable, and durable, it’s not going to leave you stranded ("click" instead of "boom"). Secondly, the 3.5” shell will work on all critters, two to four legged. Problem is, 3.5 in. shells kick like a S.O.B. and if you ever need to get a follow up shot, you are going to need more time to recover than you would from a 2 3/4”. Stick with the 2 3/4 in. shells, they kick less, and they will give you more capacity if you happen to have multiple home invaders or if you miss (it’s dark, you are naked *presumably*, you are full of adrenaline and dazed). The 2.75” will knock someone flat pretty damn well though. I pray that you never have to use it for home defense though.
Shotgun is as much psycological as physical. While some bigger bullets may be in order, (like slugs or 00 buck) having a shotgun pointed at you will stop any home invasion.
It will do the trick but I use a semi-automatic SKS (7.62×39) with a thirty round clip.
You need to discus this with your Dad, not with strangers. Lee
* Yes, it is A-OK.*
