Is this a good shotgun for home defense?
I was thinking about buying this 12 gauge Mossberg 500 tactical shotgun:

What is the effective range of a shotgun shell (00 buck, slug, etc…?)
Is a shotgun blast deadlier than a rifle blast?

Yes that is a very good shotgun….. I do suggest you purchase a slightly different model…. Get a Mossberg 500 pump but with a full stock…. Those pistol grip ones beat up the hands and they are not accurate — they look great in the movies but in reality its hard to hit anything more than a few feet away…..

Slugs? — With a full stock shotgun the limit depends on you…. I don’t have any problem hitting a man size target too 100 yards with a Mossberg 12 gauge security shotgun – BUT it took a lot of practice to accurately do that every-time — Only use 2 3/4 inch slugs and practice regularly…..
I would suggest getting a Benelli or a Mosin Nagant.

I’ve looked at a lot of opinions on the pistol only grip, and most people feel you should have a stock. I will let others who know more answer the effective range question, but 00 buck is great for taking someone down in your house (stopping power), but a miss will go through drywall and such, if that is a concern for you. The way my house is, I don’t have that concern, so I can bring all the firepower I want. If that is a concern for you, research other buckshot, or in a small apartment, bird shot. At the range you would be using inside a home, a shot gun would be fine power wise compared to a rifle. Most home defense research that I’ve done shows a preference for a shotgun or a pistol, not a rifle.
Other than the lack of a shoulder piece – Yes, you have a decent shotgun. For home defense only. With just that hand/wrist grip you won’t need to worry about the effective range. You will need to be close to be sure of knocking anything down. With that kind of setup you will really need to practice at a range to be sure of hitting anything you aim at.
Effective range of a shotgun shell depends on the "choke". It can range from 25 yards to 45 yards. Terminal range is around 200 yards.
Dead is dead. A shotgun blast gives you a tiny bit of leeway in hitting your target, but not much.
Any 12 gauge shotgun would be good for home defence. Heck you really don’t have to aim. Just point and shoot. That is if an intruder is in your home or coming at you. The range for 00 buck shot would be around 40 yards to be real effective. Slugs are good for about 75 to 100 yards. The thing with the slug is you would have to aim, rather than spraying a intruder with some nasty bbs. Personally if someone pointed a shotgun at me I would try to go the other way! 12 gauge shotguns can do alot of damage at close range, where as a rifle does at long range.
I’d get rid of that attachment on the muzzle. That thing is designed for police SWAT team use, with the special rounds made for busting door locks. Other than that, it should be a perfectly useful gun. Use #4 or #6 shot, so you will be less likely to go through any walls and nail your dog or kids.
As a personal defensive weapon a shotgun has no equal. It is said most confrontations take place at around 10 feet. At close range a shotgun will do more damage but anything more than 15 yards your pushing the shot. The closer the better and more likely will have the positive aspect of having one less POS breathing in the world. Although I would say to use #4. 00 can go through a couple walls before losing enough energy. You don’t want to shoot your neighbor.
