Looking for a home defense shotgun. What would be a good,inexpensive gun? Is Pump or Semi-Auto best?

Also, is the 12 or 20 gauge recommended? Ease of use is a must, for a jittery wife. Thanks.

for your wife, a 20 gauge is ideal. A pump action is more dependable, a semi auto must be stripped and detail cleaned often and can still jam in an emergency. A pump is easier to clear a jam, and more dependable. The Mossberg shotgun is a very dependable choice at a good price. Which ever one you chose, she needs to operate it, and shoot it to develop the muscle memory to use it correctly in an emergency, and she needs to learn gun safety to prevent a serious injury or worse. Make sure you get the 18 1/2 " barrel for ease of handling and light weight. Load it with the first 2 rounds up as #7 bird shot. This has low recoil, and it will stop a man across the room or down the hall, but limits overpenetration thru a wall.
Another good choice is s simple revolver chambered in .38spcl, but she would need to really use it to be safe with it. The draw back for the shotgun, is that if she tries to go tru the house from room to room, a bad guy might be able to grab the barrel of the shotgun as she enters. This can be avoided with proper training, but unless she is willing to learn, I’d suggest the .38 and proper training. either one will work, but not with out the training.

Mossberg 500, or Remington 870, in 20 gauge, remove the plug, alternate loads between slugs and 00 buckshot

You could look at getting a 410 maybe.
It is not as powerful as a 12 or 20 gauge, but it is a small shotgun.
Good size for women to use as well.
It might not be as effective in killing someone or something, but it would still damage them.

Simplest is a Double Barreled Side by side, or over and under Shotgun.* Forget about a pump action for her.* Use number 4 bird shot for lethal in home self-defense ammo.*
