Mossberg 500VR vs. Remington 870 Express shotguns?
Hi, does anyone have opinions on the Mossberg 500VR vs. Remington 870 Express shotguns? The MossbergVR is on sale for 0 and the Remington 870 Express for 0. Use is for target shooting and home defense. Thanks.
I appreciate the responses guys.
I’m still trying to find out what the "VR" is (the Mossberg site doesn’t say).

VR means Vent Rib….
Both the 870 and 500 are excellent shotguns for hunting…. I prefer the Mossbergs but the 870 has legions of fans also….
Since you mentioned home defense I strongly suggest the Mossberg… There are some strong arguments in which I am in agreement as to why the Mossberg 500 is better for security purposes….
Look here for the technical reasons why….

I know budgets can be tight these days – But surely look over the Mossberg 500 combo model… Its delivered with 2 barrels.. 1 Long one for hunting and a shorter one for security use….
Take a look……

When you get home from target shooting or hunting it only takes 1 minute or less to swap on the short security barrel………

I own the Rem 870 Express because of its reliablity. This is going to be a Chevy vs Ford discussion. Figure out what you prefer because they are subsitutable.

The 870 express is a marginally better shotgun. Smoother action and better made, with better fit n finish.

Mossberg 500 has been used by the military and law enforcement for many years. The VR I’m not sure of .
I wouldn’t be afraid of either one , and you would have to see which one feels right for you.
VR vent rib as said, duh, I went dumb on that (non of mine has a vent rib accept one) some say there is an advantage to them

mossberg has a saftey on top of reciver for amberdexterous but i think its ugly remy has the saftey in trigger guard i likey dat smy preference there very alike but remy has a smoother action but i dont like the skinny receiver much on the remy but would still take it i dont know why they made the remy receiver so skinny feels like a toy gun sometimes holding the grip shooting its just up to you to decide

I have owned both models of shotgun. In the field while shooting clays I have seen my Mossberg Bolt/Bolt Carrier Assembly fall apart due to recoil. Its has a few more loose parts than a Remington. The Remington 870 has been an American standard for many decades, and in my opinion, for good reason. The Remington does not have as many "bolt-on" pieces because its Bolt Carrier Rails are part of the stamped reciever. I am not against Mossberg, they make alot of great firearms, but I HAVE witnessed 2 failures while firing as opposed to never having witnessed any failures with any Remington. If you go with Mossberg, I suggest on the first cleaning that you strip it all down and use "Loc-Tite" on all screws and fasteners when you put it back together to prevent pieces from loosening as you blast your targets to their well-deserved hell. Or, you can just spend the extra bucks on a Remington and not ever worry. I also own a Winchester 1300 Defender, and a Benelli Nova. I tell you that so you will know I am not one of those guys who only swear by one brand. God Bless you for exercising your 2nd Amendment Rights and protecting your family.
