Mossberg Or Ruger .22 and A Shotgun for me?
One of these questions are for me and the other is for my Brother.
My brother wants a .22 Rifle. He is new to the Idea of owning a gun. We both have shot many guns including 9mm, .223, and 12 Gauge.
My brother was looking at the Famous Ruger 10/22 and the Mossberg Plinkster. He likes the Idea of upgrading the Ruger 10/22 but he doesn’t like the Price. He knows that the Plinkster is Cheap and it is very Accurate but he doesn’t like how you can’t upgrade it. WHICH WOULD BE MORE OF A BANG FOR THE BUCK?
For me I like the Idea of a 12gauge shotgun. It will be for Hunting, home defense, and the regular shooting at fun stuff(Junk).
The Shotgun needs to be cheap(under 0). I was looking at the NewEngland Arms, Maverick and a few others. What is your guy’s taste?

You’ll be able to customize the 10/22 more easily if you want to later but the 702 is a great gun for the money.
As far as shotguns, I would get a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 ( a nice used one will be less than $300 usually)

Okay… I have a Ruger 10/22 and its a great gun. Never misfired on me and hits what I aim at. The fun thing about the 10/22 is you can mod it and add onto it.
As for the shotgun, I have a Maverick…and I know people talk crap about them, but I love mine. its a good gun. I shoot it ever weekend (for a year now) and never had any problems with at all!

I think he will be happier in the long run with the standard 10/22. Frequently it is better to spend a few dollars more and get something that will hold it’s value better. The ruger 10/22 is a name everyone will know. It will either last forever and you can give it to your grandkids, or it will hold it’s value when you sell it.
As far as shotguns, i’d stay away from NEF. The other poster nailed it when he suggested getting a slightly used Remington 870 express, or a mossberg 500

I’d recommend the 10/22 for sure. They are real nice little shooters for a reasonable cost. You can ‘soup them up’ easily. (I know because I have about $900 in mine – very nice now).
The Remington 870 pump is the most popular shotgun made. You can’t go wrong with it. If you are looking to spend $300 on a shotgun, go ahead and get you a new 870 – you won’t regret it!

My preferences are the Roger 10/22 which is under $200, and the 7 shot 18" barrel Remington 870 Express, which runs about $340, or the Mossberg 500A 6 shot Persuader with 18" barrel and bead sight. The Mossberg cost about $250.

i would really reccoment the rugger 10/22 they last forever and the mossbergs are made of plastic parts. for a 12 gauge. they make these "charles daily" they are amazing cheap shotguns. the remington 870 are sweet shotguns. the mossbergs i would say go for it just dont buy it from wal mart. wal mart buys low quality guns. Places like bass pro have higher quailty mossbergs. There are a diffrence.

Cheap = Buy Used!!!! 10-22 = quality Budget shotguns can be had on th eused market as well. A used 870 Remington can be had for under $300. The 870 falls under the same category as the 10-22. You can buy anything you want to upgrade it and it won’t cost a fortune to do. extra barells can be had for reasonable prices and are easy to find.

The Ruger 10/22 is a better 22LR, by far. Its the best selling 22LR on the market. Right behind it is the Marlin 60. Both rifles can be bought for under $200.
I like the Ruger 10/22 better. I love the fact that you can customize it to your taste. You don’t need to buy everything at once. Buy a little at a time. At the end, your brother would have a very nice 22LR. I have two of these riles. I’d like to customize one and keep the other one stock.
The Marlin 60 is a great little 22LR, at a cheap price. I like that is has an integrated base mount, to mount a scope on. Just buy some rings and scope, mount it and you’ll be shooting in no time. My cousin and a friend have a Marlin 60. I’ve shot it many times. Its a good rifle for those on a budget.
As for a shotgun. The Mossberg 500 can be had for $250. Nice shotgun, for the money. I had a 500 before. Also look at the Stoeger P-350, for $290. I know the Remington Model 870 Express, pump action 12 gauge is out of your price range…..But its worth the money, around $373 for it. Also try looking at the Benelli Nova, for $360. Like the Remington 870, the Nova has reduced recoil. I can shoot both guns all day long and not feel like my arm is going to fall off.

I beg to differ with the mossberg plinkster because I own one and I’ve got a nice tasco 4 power scope on it. You can also buy a wood stock for it if you buy the rifle with the synthetic stock. You just have to go to the back of the manual and get the part number for it and contact mossberg. Other than that I don’t know what kind of customization you had in mind.

I have a Ruger 10/22 I bought used, and a Mossberg Defender 500 pump shotgun I bought new, and I wouldn’t part with either.

Buy yourselves two (2)* good used guns, and save yourselves some $$$$.* A new gun doesn’t shoot any better than a good used gun.* Used is the best value for what you want to spend on them.* Bought all 26 of my rifles, pistols, shotguns and revolvers used, with no regrets.*

alrite fellow gun owner! ur bro needs the 10/22, it is one of the best and probably the most famous 22 lr. ever made. you can upgrade it anyway u want to also, plus it’s easier to find parts for and resale value is great! the mossberg however will start to show problems fairly soon if u use it quite often and resale on those things suck. i own a 10/22 and i love it, in my opinion though the best 22 ever made was the remington nylon 66 but good luck finding one under 400.
for ur shotgun, look for a used remington 870, the 870 is the most reliable pump for the money. and u can change from a home defense to a field gun in just a few minutes, the new england pardner is a decent pump, but the 870 wins hands down. and like i said before stay away from mossberg. especially the maverick, if u end up with a mossberg, u want a 500. just do some research and shop around to find what really is best for u.
