Mossberg shotguns: 18 1/2 or 20 inch?
November 20th, 2009 by eranio
I was thinking about buying a Mossberg 500 Persuader or Mossberg Maverick 88 in 12 gauge. Is there a big weight difference between the 18 1/2 inch and 20 inch versions? Am I even gonna notice it? I’ve never gotten to hold them side by side.
It’ll probably be used for both home defense and at the range.

Both 18 1/2 and 20′ are good for home it will not make much a difference . But i would not buy a mossburg if I were you I would get a REMINGTON 870 . If price is a problem I would buy used a uesd REMINGTON is better then a new mossberg.

You won’t notice any difference in weight; however, if the shotgun is to be used in home self defense, every inch counts when in hallways and going around corners.
Get the 18.5," you’ll sleep better at night

I happen to own both….. Both have there positive points….. There is a small weight difference between the 2… But when both magazine tubes are loaded the 20 inch 8 shot model is noticeably heavier…. That can be a good thing because the perceived recoil is less….
If this will be a home defense gun then surely get the 18 1/2 inch barrel… It is easier to maneuver around the house or other confined spaces with a shorter barrel 6 shot model….
Moving on…. What is the main purpose or you wanting a shotgun? — Home defense only? – target shooting at the gun range? – or a little of both… If this shotgun will rarely leave the house then get the shorter barrel one…. If you plan on shooting a lot then get the longer barrel 20 inch model…. Its got a more accurate reach…. With practice you will have no problem hitting targets to 80 yards… I use 12 inch steel gongs and make em ring…..
I have a lot of fun with the longer 8 shot unit than I do with the short barrel one… The shorter 6 shot hangs concealed behind a bedroom door for defense duty so doesn’t leave the house much except for occasional shooting….
I prefer the Persuader models more because the safety is on top… Unlike the Maverick 88′s which are down near the trigger… Less fumbling around this way….
My favorite…. I have a lot of fun with this unit…

My second favorite…. Doesnt leave the house as much….

A good choice if your on a budget…..

The barrel length itself won’t make much difference in weight, but a fully loaded 8-shot is noticeably heavier than a 6-shot – that is, until those two extra shots are fired off. At that point, its very reassuring to still have 6 more to go. Practise maneuvering the gun in tight quarters, keeping it close to the body, and the extra 1 1/2" of barrel won’t be a problem.
