I’ll give you the same answer I just gave a young lady asking about Mossbergs. They are in my opinion and extensive experience a very rugged and reliable shotgun, and a good buy for the money. In fact, every night you will find a Mossberg 500 with a 20" barrel and flashlight built into the fore end, on a stand right beside my bed as a home defense gun. During the day, it resides in my gunsafe becasue my ccw pistol is always on my right hip. I have used the remington 870 both in my squad car and for hunting. It also is a great shotgun. You won’t go wrong with either one.

At my farm I give my help Mossbergs to shoot. We’ve got a couple of the 735s and beside my bed for home defense is a 500 (flash-light, collapsible stock, extended mag). I also have a silver reserve over under which I hunt dove with. I have found the mossbergs to be very reliable and able to stand up to extreme abuse ( especially the 735 that the farm hands use).

I’ve also got 2 stevens, a Winchester, JC Higgins, a Remington 870 and even a browning B-80 in my arsenal. I’ll put the mossbergs up against them for reliabilty, price and value any day of the week. The Browning is more stylish and expensive and when I’m duck hunting with friends I use it for the snob factor.

The mossberg model 500 is the only shotgun to meet military spec.

Been using them for years. I have a old one thats a bucket of rust, been banged around in the bottom of boats and in truck tool boxes but it has never failed me.

Very good quality shotguns, I would stay away from the cheaply made maverick

We use both Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s at work. They are both good, reliable shotguns. A lot of new shooters seem to think the Mossberg has less felt recoil. I don’t agree, but it’s their shoulder, not mine.

For PERSONAL use (NOT agency use), I believe that either will give a lifetime of reliable service. IMHO, it’s a matter of personal preference when choosing one for the average casual shooter.

The Mossberg is as tough and reliable as a shotgun can get, it’s the only shotgun the military has ever tested that had (0) failures! And SON do they ever test them.
The 870 is a great gun also, as are many others on the market.
I’m presently trying to decide wheather I would rather have the Mossberg or the FN as my home defense shotgun.

I’ve taken pretty much every game you can get in the south east with my mossberg 500 at one time or another. It’s never failed to fire, it jammed a little once (jam isn’t really the right word, more of a hesitation with ejection) with 3" slugs because the shell expanded in an odd way after firing (weak shell or something) but it was easy to pick out with my hand. It shoots great, even rifled slugs shoot good out of it.

Like I said I’ve used it for everything (swamp bunnies to deer), although now I just use it as my turkey gun. It’s a good deal, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The only negative I can think of is, I have small hands and the grip on the mossberg 500 is large, so for skeet/wing shooting I like the Remington 870 "wingmaster". Other than skeet it’s a Mossberg for me.

    Go with the Mossberg!!!

Over the years, I have seen and experienced what is known as a "Double Feed" with both the Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500. For some reason, the magazine will release 2 rounds at the same time, causing a jam in the bottom of the receiver. The only way to clear the jam is to push the second round back into the magazine. The loading arm that normally lifts the rounds up to the chamber is in the down position with both shells jammed on top of it. The loading arm on the Mossberg is open in the middle and the jam is easily cleared using your index finger to push the second shell back into the magazine. The Remington 870 loading arm is solid and you need to insert something like a knife blade or screwdriver tip along the side of the loading arm to push the shell back into the magazine.

    Go with the Mossberg!!!

I have owned Mossberg Model 500′s and 835 ULTI-MAGS. Both with good results.

And I still use the 835 ULTI-MAG. I use it for deer, squirrel and turkey. Its dead on accurate and absolutely dependable.

    I highly recommend it.
