Most powerful kind of shotgun shell?

1) What is the most powerful type of shotgun shell?

2) For those of you who use shotguns for home defense, what kind of ammo do you use for it?

Technically the strongest would be 10 gauge 3.5 inch shells, though a 12 gauge 3.5 magnum shell would be sufficient too.

I find the best shotgun setup for home defense is to have an extended magazine, first shot is a blank (lets the family know to get on the floor so i don’t have to worry about them), then every shot after that is an alternate between buckshot and slugs. Just be aware of what order they come in so you know what you’re firing. If you live in an apartment or are otherwise worried about shot going through walls, use number 7 shot instead of the buck/slugs.

Shot placement is key in my opinion, not power.

    Anyhow, I use 2 3/4 00 buck.

Double 0. Which is 9 (i think) 38 cal round balls per shell. After all, you ain’t quail hunting.

10 Gauge slug or 3.5 000 buck. but a 12 gauge with 000 magnum buckshot would do almost the same thing. are we talking about slugs? i don’t know but if you are the 10 gauge 3.5 in magnum slug is the most powerful shotgun shell.

1/ 10 gauge wildfowling loads / (edit) you can get slugs?
2/ i dont keep one for home defense but i bet anything in my cabinet would f**k up your day in a combined space. i do have some 3" 50 gram BB’s that are comfortable through my auto, but most people like pumps for home defence so its best to bring the load down and shotsize up

technically it would be a 1 gauge but those are illegal now

    i use 3 inch 00 buckshot

Current production? the 10 gauge and 12 gauge 3.5" shells are about equal as both will push 2 ounces of shot to around 1,250-300fps.

home defense use? if you aren’t worried about heavy winter clothing most of the loads with birdshot from #2 down to 6 works well enough at really close distances but if you have to worry about heavy clothes or shots at 20 feet or more I prefer the buck shot loadings.

2 bore… yes it’s a black powder cartridge, but the amount of shot it throws out of the tube is unmatched, along with the amount of kick at the other end on your shoulder. I prefer 12 gauge 00 buckshot, it penetrates well, yet does not usually overpenetrate targets (usually, note: USUALLY). That and it is unmatched in stopping power on a man sized target, even a "Bigfoot" some 13 or so feet tall would not stand up to it. In close quarters fighting, such as fighting off a home invader, birdshot would work nicely. It has that "meat-grinder" effect on the target, and yes, will penetrate and kill them at the ranges I expect you would be using it at.
