My Grandpa asks: How much is a New Haven Arms Co double barrel shotgun from 1884 in excellent condition worth?

February 20th, 2010 by eranio

He showed me it and it is incredible. It has nice detailed carving and looks very nice and clean. He said he hasn’t used it in decades but he said it worked when my father was a kid. It has two barrels that fire independently and it is a "break barrel" (not sure what that means). If you need more info let me know and i can call him and ask. I have some pics if you need to see it. Click the links below for the pics. Thank you for your help!

How did you come to that value?! I see only 2 New Haven guns on that page – one for ,000 and another for ,000. So why only 00 for mine?
OK I guess it is an 1864 then. Any ideas on value??

I am sure a more expert on double guns will come by shortly but in the meantime. In the meantime I can say that New Haven Arms Company is what Winchester called itself for a while in the civil war days, so that fits with the 1884 date.

Get your camera out again, Through no fault of your own, you took a picture that gives almost no information, you just never had it explained to you before.

To get more information, we will need pictures of the sideplates, the part on the side just above the trigger, the open chamber (like if you were going to load it) and most especially take a picture of any word or number or letter stamped onto the barrel or any other part of the gun.

Now, I can’t really tell from that picture, but it looks like it might be a damascus barrel. Unfortunately, that is bad. See that technique was a cheap way to make barrels by taking a long stick and then wrapping wire around the outside of it, then heating the wire up and hammering it to weld it all together. Unfortunately that technique doesn’t age well, and those barrels tend to blow apart. It is possible that such a gun would be safe to fire with real blackpowder shotgun shells but not with anything modern you bought at the store.

Are you sure it’s an 1884
New Haven Arms ceased to exist in 1866, when it was renamed Winchester

    EDIT
Too many details left out to give a good answer
If it is a New Haven Arms Co gun (as far as I can find) it would have had to be made before 1866
If it was made before 1866, it would have been more likely a muzzle loader
It also would have to either be a Volcanic rifle or a Henry

    Check again
    We need a model number
More up close pics of the lock works

Oh yeah the barrels do look Damascus from here

OK looks like I might have found something
