O/U shotgun or Semi auto (Trap shooting)?

March 13th, 2010 by eranio

Next year i will be in high school (9th grade). I’m going to join the 4-H trap shooting team. Should I get a semi-auto or a O/U. I want a 20ga (no 12GA). I’ve seen i few and going to get a job for the summer (so i can save up for it).
I have shot sporting clays before. I need a gun for comp. I have trained with pump.
Thanks all yall except the guy who said i shoud start with a pump.

O/U. When I went skeet shooting with my grandfather the Semi’s that I saw there had the issue of every once in a while not cycling for one reason or another. Not good for your score if you have a malfunction.

Keep it traditional and get an O/U. Good choice on the 20 ga too. Check out stoeger condor for an inexpensive but great quality o/u. There are not too many 20 ga semi autos either, but browning makes a couple.

Is this your first time shooting a clay sport?

if so, i would suggest neither and tell you to get a cheap pump. after that, if you like the sport, invest in a nice o/u and a set of tubes. why spend the money if you aren’t sure?

I was on that team in high school using an over/under and was able to outshoot everybody and their brother with semi autos. I think that over/unders just do better wing shooting so they do better for skeet as well. That is just my opinion though. I do know of people who can shoot semi auto all day and miss less than 10 birds. Do whatever feels best for you though. If possible shoot the gun your looking at to help decide.

Typically you can get a nicer semi for the same cost of a lower model O/U. Another thought is the Browning BT-99. Good single barrel gun so long as you arent going to be shooting doubles.
