Both guns are very good. In my personal opinion the Remington 870 would be my favorite. I have 5 870′s and 4 of them are wingmasters which are very reliable. I have 1 express magnum and I am not as satisfied with that model. There is really nothing wrong with it but its quality is not as good as the wingmaster. Mossburg 500 is also a very good gun. I believe you can’t go wrong with either choice.

They are both excellent reliable guns. For self defense, the 500 wins due to the location of the safety and slide release. For hunting and skeet shooting, the 870 is my first choice.

The 500, hands down. 15 years ago, I would have said the 870, but while Mossberg’s quality has gone up, Remington’s has gone down.

The 870 is the better choice, for one you can’t change the choke in a mossberg 500.

They are both great guns, but I would go with the 870. The simple reason is that the 870 has been around longer and has a slightly better performance and reliability record. All in all either one would do well for you if you are asking because you are considering getting one.
Also, Arkel D is wrong. I have a 500 and it has removable chokes. Some models might still have a fixed choke, but you can get a 500 with removable chokes.

Both are good.
It depends on your preference and the intended use of the weapon.

Six of one and half dozen of the other. Just get one of each and you will have something for both hands.
