problem with my mossberg 590 shotgun?

July 15th, 2010 by eranio

i have a mossberg 590 tactical. just recently i noticed the shells were staying stuck in the mag and not being chambered. so i can only shoot what i load directly into the chamber. from what i can tell the cartidge stop is not flexing outward when i pull the forearm back raising the elevator to release a shell into the chamber. in fact the cartidge stop sticks out and makes it hard just to load shells. the shells rub on it and they just dont load smoothly. also when disassembling the gun, i have noticed the elevator doesnt want to come out without pushing one side inward and then pulling up. it is rubbing metal otherwise. its like its bent or there is a flaw somewhere. i was wondering if the elevator should smoothly slide up before pinching to release. my main thing overall is i wanted to know the relationship between the elevator and the cartidge stop because i feel like this is the problem. one or both of them. i am fairly new at this so if any of you know a lot about this your input would be great thanks

Strip it down to its basic parts and WD-40 the entire receiver out real good. New guns will have metal flakes and crap in the guides etc. Chances are, that’s your prob. Once it’s clean, oil it. Get the guide slots, the inside top of the receiver, and the elevator holes lubed. Take the elevator and the bolt and slide them through each other a few times to make sure there’s no real rubbing….if there is, gently spread the elevator arms til the bolt fits through them cleanly. Now, replace the elevator into the receiver and work it up and down a few times to make sure there’s no rubbing there. If there is, take it out and squeeze it slightly. Do the bolt adjust and the receiver adjust back and forth til you get that one right spot where neither rub as they work. Reassemble the gun as usual til you get to the cartridge stop and the interruptor. Do the interruptor first. That’s the one with the pin on it that fts the receiver hole. Stick it into its slot and hold the back edge with your thumb as you slowly work the slide back and forth. It’s tripped by the bolt carrier and should pivot up and down as the carrier hits it. Make sure that one works and then pull it back out. Next, do the same with the stop. Hold it in the slot with your thumb all the way at the back and work the slide slowly. It’s tripped by the rising elevator so the back should press against your thumb as the elevator comes up. It’s like a small seesaw. One end comes out as the other is pressed in. If it’s not working, pull it out and see if it’s bent. It should be perfectly flat, other than the obvious punched section toward the middle, with just a slight swell to make it seesaw. Don’t try bending it til you’re sure it’s actually bent!

If all else fails and your stop is really bent, you can get a new one on gunbroker for just a few dollars. That’s a cheap part.

Sounds like you have a bent part. Call Mossberg and order a replacement. If it fixes the problem than someone may have bent it during maintenance.

I do not know what the problem is but what ever you do DO NOT SPRAY YOUR RECIEVER WITH WD-40 it is not good for you firing pin or working parts.
