Questions about an old double barrel shotgun?

November 5th, 2009 by eranio

I have a J Stevens arms and tool co. double barrel hammered 12 gauge shotgun with the numbers 3764 on the barrel and on many other parts, I would like to know everything I can about this gun and where if possible to get replacement parts as the spring for one of the hammers internally is missing thanks for any info…

I agree with Randy except I have never seen a $900 Stevens SxS in perfect condition they sell for about $350 to $400 at every show I have ever been to or sold at

If you check out the shotgun news you should be able to find replacement parts.
Important until you know more about it don’t fire standard shells through it.
Older weapons aren’t strong enough to fire modern loads without damaging them or even causing a fatal misfire due to weaker metals and metallurgy processes like in damascus steel barrels

Take it to a competent Gunsmith, he will be able to fix it.*

    numricharms.com should have the parts.
J stevens arms of chicopee falls mass. produced a large number of shotguns between 1877 & 1988 under the inhouse names of Stevens,Riverside, springfield and super value.
Most run between $900 and $1200 New in box, but a few go up to around $3200 NIB.
Without a model number I can’t give you a good appraisal. Also, the older models had damascus barrels and will not handle modern loads. These can be easily picked out by the irregular ring pattern around the length of the barrel caused by forging.
My best advice, if there is no model on it, is to have it examined by a gunsmith to determine what model it is.
    good luck
    shoot safe
