Rubber bullets with a shotgun?
Alright so im going to buy a shotgun when I turn eighteen, which is in about 2 months. I was thinking about getting the FN tactical police shotgun, or just a mossberg model.
Do they sell rubber bullets to civilians, and can these shotguns use them? If it comes down to self defense, i would rather not kill someone, but just drop them and call the cops.
Well here if an attacker comes at you with his hands, and you have a gun, killing him would not be self defense. If i did have a rubber bullet, i would indeed shoot him in the leg, or somewhere where i think he would not die.

One can readily buy both rubber buckshot and rubber slug. They will fire through most shotguns, but my not have enough force to cycle a semi auto. Also note these rounds are still lethal. Properly used they are to be fired towards the ground half the distance to the target for the shot to bounce to the target.
When it comes to self defense one can only legally fire when ones life is in danger! Some states do have castle doctrine, as well as other laws on the books and you need to know these before you think about using your firearm as a defensive tool or take your chances with the law.
The problem arises with rubber buckshot or any gimmick load is for you to legally fire you have to be in fear of your life, but you have chosen a round you believe is less than lethal. If you were to fire the prosecutor will ask why when faced with grave bodily harm or death did you use a rubber buckshot.
As for an unarmed aggressor attacking you while holding a firearm; you should very well believe the unarmed attacker has every intention of taking that firearm away from you and using it on you. You then have every right, as long as your legally eligible to have the firearm where your at, in defending yourself.
You really to rethink why you want a firearm. You seem to be more of "I hope this will scare them away" group, than I’ll do everything to defend myself group. Maciavelli wrote, "Never do your enemy a minor harm."
If a time arises that I need to defend my life, I am going to defend my life.
I’m not going to escalate the problem by pissing off a attacker with rubber bullets.
Rubber balls not bullets….. yes to buy for anyone.
es you can buy them. Look on line you will find different websites that sell them. Cheaper than Dirt is one. If you are looking to realy defend your self go all the way and buy buck shot.
You need to STOP and completely re-evaluate your thinking. Any firearm is a lethal weapon and will kill, rubber shot or not.
If you have the JUSTIFICATION to use a FIREARM, it is a LIFE or DEATH situation and you need to be prepared with the WILL to take a life to save your own or that of a loved one.
Thinking a shotgun with rubber shot will be better is ill informed or just downright dumb. Never use a gun if you do not have the reason and the intention to kill.
Yes, you may buy rubber bullets for a shotgun as a civilian (click on the below link). I do agree with the first answer. If it is a life or death situation, I do not want to be using rubber bullets. The only situation where these would come in handy as I see it is to shoot nuisance animals that are protected.

Yes they do. Best ones to get are referred to as the ‘hornets nest’ and it has a lot of little rubber balls that will hit them. They go quite fast, and they hurt like a bitch. SO I disagree with the 1st answer, it will drop someone! They use them a lot when prison riots happen, just don’t get the stupid bean bag rounds, they may hurt but they are not always accurate either. These things (rubber balls) will hurt someone, could even break ribs if in close quarters. So yes they will work in probably any shotgun they are chambered for, and they will hurt and stop an attacker. Just remember if he does try to move again, shoot him again. As for me, I ain’t worried bout their safety, so they can say hello to a 45 =)
But it is nice that you are thinking of less than lethal measures also. But mind you, too close as about 5 feet or so they could still kill someone just from impact. Hell tazers have killed people. Like I said, I myself am just going all in with a bullets.
EDIT: well in your case of an unarmed attacker, it does make sense. But my state is a lot like texas (Indiana) we have The Castle law (or Castle Doctrine) what ever they call it to be propper, saying if someone breaks in your home.. You can light his ass up cuz it is self defense.
Yes they do…. Take a look….

PLEASE NOTE…. Just because its called less than lethal or are made of rubber this type of ammunition can still absolutely kill somebody if they are hit at close range or in the head…. The farther away a person is the less likely it is to be lethal but don’t think for a moment this stuff isn’t dangerous….
You need to study the law. If an attacker comes at you with his hands, you cannot shoot him in the leg with rubber bullets any more than you can shoot him in the face with lead ones. There is no difference under the law concerning what projectile you have in your gun.
Next, you can’t carry a shotgun around loaded for protection, so the only case in which you can shoot it for self defense reasons is if someone breaks into your home. At that point, it doesn’t matter if they have a gun, a knife, or nothing. You have every right to shoot and kill them.
Do NOT follow through with this. You will likely never need to use a gun for protection, but if you did with this idea, you would wind up dead. If you are not prepared to take a life to defend yourself, then do NOT buy a gun.
Don’t bother.
Self Defense requires you to survive an attack.
Rubber and salt rock loads may just get the criminal angry!
Use real loads, and live.
Hope never have to find out…
First question: No, rubber bullets are generally not available to the general public but are for Law enforcement/government only. These are for riot control not self-defense.
If you ever find yourself in a life-or-death situation and you aim to wound you will be sued and you could lose big regardless of what the bad guy was up to. Why? Because his attorney will say that you did not need to use deadly force, since his client is still alive and now crippled or disabled. His attorney will say that you deliberately intended to punish, even torture his client and so you used less-than-deadly force. If deadly force had been necessary because you really and truly feared for your life or the life of another you never would have used rubber bullets (or aimed to wound).
I know that no one wants to take a life but what I stated above pretty well tells it like it is in the real world.
H
Might as well take them out for good or they’ll come back later to take you out.
I think yiou can find some rubber bullets if you look online or ask your local gun shop.
Good Luck!
may as well just buy yourself a baseball bat if you dont wanna kill someone if they are willing to kill you its cheaper
If somebody has a nail gun with 6 inch metal nails shooting at me, I’m not going to get some rubber bands and shoot a rubber band gun at them.
That’s what you might as well say in your question. I understand you not wanting to kill someone, but if you come at me to hurt me and I have a gun, you best believe you probably won’t be living the next day. Shooting him with a rubber bullet, he’ll probably get back up. Just use regular ammo and shoot him in the leg.
Wow, this is so tremendously ill thought out, I can’t believe that you posted it.
First, yes, you can get rubber buckshot or other non-lethal ammunition online easily. But it will KILL somebody at close range if it hits them somewhere vital.
Second, if you are in a situation where you had to use a firearm for self defense, you need to realize that you are using a lethal weapon. The courts really aren’t going to care if you used buckshot or a beanbag round if the end result is the person is dead. So the lawsuit, assuming it gets that far, will be the same.
Third, if you are in a situation where you have to use a firearm to defend yourself, you do NOT aim for the leg, or the hand, or anything else. You are trying to stop a threat to yourself or others. You need to either be ready to stop that threat by whatever means you can, or be ready to let that person do whatever it is they are trying to do to you. There is no middle ground here. Either you are going to use lethal force or you are not. If you are not willing to do so, then you really shouldn’t be considering using a firearm.
Finally, most places here in the US don’t require that you use your hands to fight somebody coming at you with their hands. That is just the kind of stupidity you find on the net. All that you have to prove is that a typical, reasonable person in your situation would have felt threatened or feared for their safety, or the safety of others. That’s it. If somebody breaks into your house at night, and you blow him away, the only threshhold you need to meet is that of a reasonable person fearing for their safety. It doesn’t matter if he was armed or not. If there was a reasonable chance in your mind that he might harm you or your family, too bad, so sad for the bad guy.
Based on your post, I really don’t think that you are mentally ready for a shotgun. Especially not for self defense. If you insist on getting one, do us all a favor and take some firearms safety classes at your local range first. It really sounds like you need them. I am not trying to be insulting here, just stating my opinion
you seriously need to do some research on the law
if killing him is not justified then shooting him or even pointing the gun at him is not justified
if you think that there is even a remote glimmer of an idea that attempting to shoot him in the led is a good idea you need to seriously rethink your self defense measures
the mere act of pulling a gun is assault with a deadly weapon and a chargeable offense if he use of deadly force is not justified
if you use a gun for defense there is a real chance that someone will die
if you try to get cute with your ammo choices the possibility of it being you is greatly magnified
police do not use these round when being attacked or for self defense and only after they have had adequate time to assess the situation and have back up standing by
if you think that you will have any where near that kinda of time or back up you are living in a dream world
