Self sefense shotguns. Mossberg 500-JIC?

February 25th, 2010 by eranio

So. I dont feel very safe with a 9mm. You could wear a leather jacket and be bulletproof.

I need a shotgun, not for target practice or hunting. Just to be kept in the house for some dummy who wants to run in.

SO. Do i want a shotgun without a shoulder stock? 18 inch barrel? I mean come on. Help me out.

Is the mossberg 500 JIC (me fav so far) my best choice for self defence?

Get a shotgun with a full stock…. Those pistol grip shotguns are hard to aim and are effective for aiming at room clearing distances only…..

The Mossberg 500 is an excellent choice…. Consider the Mossberg 500 Cruiser model, 12 guage, 18 inch barrel…. This gun is quite effective in confined space’s and good for investigating outside also…. Catalog # 50411…

Keep it loaded with buckshot… 2 3/4 inch 8 or 9 pellet buckshot is ideal…. Do Not use 3 inch cartridges.. The recoil is a bit objectionable and may slow down a second or 3rd shot if required…. I keep mine loaded with Wolf 9 Pellet Buckshot… The stuff at the bottom of this page….

Not for target practice?…. I really do suggest you take your shotgun out now and then to target practice with it… That way you will be comfortable with it and use it in a smooth operator fashion instead of fumbling with it in an emergency because your not super familar with the gun……

Look here the all the shotgun tests…. Practice some of these… This stuff is very interesting as well as educational……

If you do a pistol grip get one with a stock on it. But the mossberg 500 is a great gun for home defense. The 18.5 inch barrel would be best as it will be easiest to handle in case you need to turn quickly in a hallway.

Shooting from the hip will almost guarantee that you won’t hit your target. Trying to shoot from the shoulder with a pistol grip shotgun is going to hurt. A lot.

Contrary to what you see in movies and on TV, shotguns do need to be aimed. That means that you also need to practice with them to hit your target. And you likely won’t practice with a gun that hurts (speaking from experience here).

If you’re trying to keep the shotgun compact, you might want to consider something like the Mossberg 590A1 "Tactical," which you can view at the URL below.

The 18 1/2" barrel is as short as you can get without an NFA tax stamp, and the adjustable stock will get you down to a pretty short gun. The butt on these stocks is nowhere as painful as the older metal adjustable stocks from the 1980′s and 90′s, but still not as comfortable as a full length stock.

just to quote on the 9mm vs leather jacket, if you use the right bullets, you won’t have this problem.

I would opt for a shoulder stock with or without a pistol grip, your choice, 18.5 inch barrel to be on the safe side and use #3-#2 buckshot, the 0 buckshots penetrate too much for indoor defence, endangering other people in the house/apartment and neighbours.
my choices for home defence shotguns would be:
    - the Mossberg Persuader 6 shot with shoulder stock, it also has a pistol grip kit so you can change it for having fun with at the range(never say you won’t do it, it’s fun)
    - the Maverick by Mossberg model 88 security 6 shot, really good gun for the money and will do the job nicely, just has less accessory options.
    - the Remington 870 Express Tactical, good gun, more expensive then the other two, but still a great buy and looks awesome
    - the Stoeger Coach Gun, double barrels are often over looked for home defence, but I believe it shouldn’t take more then two shots to take down a man or two, pretty quick to reload and are the fastest in my opinion to get the second shot in, just a second trigger instead of pumping the action and then pulling the trigger and they’re easier to maintain.

about the 500 JIC, it’s a crappy self defence gun, only good for showing off to your friends at the range, the pistol grip will force you to hip fire, the least accurate aim possible, a shoulder stock is a necessity for good home defence.
