Shotgun for Summer, and everything else, Mossberg vs Remington and other?
I’m thinking about getting a new/ good condition shotgun over the Summer, shotguns are the one thing me and my father don’t have many of, maybe only 3 or more, the ones I know of are a double barrel break action 20 gauge, a long barreled goose 12 gauge and one other which I’ve forgotten what it was. So I’ve decided by the end of Summer I should pick one up. I want something for just walking around in the woods, maybe home defense and SHTF "hey, you never know" I want a pump action, synthetic stock to start with, 12 gauge shotgun, I’ve looked at the Mossberg 500 and Rem 870 and I know there’s a lot of debates over them, and I’m not asking for that, just what you guys think of them, I want something to that has a lot of capacity, I’m not much of a shotgun man so I know every little about models, I also want one with out an internal choke so I can shoot slugs out of it, but possibly an adapter at the end to install one. And if any of you could give me almost a full review of any guns that might suit my needs would be amazing. Sorry if anything may sound novice level but like I said, I’m not a shotgun man, I just learned how a choke worked a few days ago. Thanks. Price isn’t a major deal but let’s try to keep it as low as possible.
I looked on Gunbroker and it looks like I’d be paying from 0-0 for a Mossberg 500
Yes I know this question has been brought up so much, too bad, but I’m not asking Vs of the two, just your thoughts and/or any other models, I’m not asking for self def so relax, but a high cab, pump action, reliable shotgun.
With as much capacity as I can possibly get out of a pump action, tube feed shotgun.
I think I’m leaning towards the Mossberg 500 or 590, but ammo’s a b!@#$ so I’ll have to find the best deal I can.

I think most shotguns on the market today are good.It comes down to what you like. In pa you can’t hunt with a police stile high capacity shotgun and you can’t wander around the woods out of hunting season with a gun. If you are looking to hunt with it you need to check your game laws in your state before you buy.Remington and mossberg are the most popular.I would go to a few different gun shops and look at the ones you want side by side and pick the one that feels the best in your hands.I do like the Remington better but get what feels right to you.

The Mossberg and the Remington are good shotguns, no doubt. It’s pointless to argue about how durable they are, seeing as they are both very well proven guns. If you want something nice, I mean really nice, why don’t you take a look at the Ithacas? The Ithaca corporation makes the best fitting, smoothest, lightest, most durable shotguns that I know of (aside from some *very* nice custom guns.). The New Ithacas start at about $800 or so (I’m talking about the Model 37 featherlight), of which used specimens in very good condition can vary from $250-$500 depending on model (several different M37′s out there). The Ithaca is the smoothest shotgun you will ever feel, well worth their price new. The downside is that you feel bad if you ding it at all…

The Mossberg 500 with it’s aluminum receiver will weigh less than a Remington 870 with the same length barrel. THe Mossberg 500 has a tang safety that works for both right and left handed shooters. The Remington 870 has a cross-bolt safety on the trigger guard that works best for only those who are right handed. Mossberg 500 gets an extra 2 3/4" shell in capacity than a Remington 870.
Slugs can be fired through a screw in choke tube. Many barrels have a screw in choke. Just make sure yours does before purchase. This will give you a wide option of choke available, but the Improved Cylinder seems to do what your wanting.

Ive worked at two different gun shops, the current a big chain store. I sell a ton of inexpensive shotguns. From my experience as a gun salesman, I can comfortably say that the remingtons are of much higher quality. I have never had to send a remington back to the factory. I have sent about a half dozen back to Mossberg.
I have a fair amount of experience with both guns. They both perform almost identically, although the mossbergs rattle a little more. The 870 Express is a little more sturdy, but still not as tight as the 870 Wingmaster. I would highly suggest holding off, saving up a couple hundred dollars extra, and going for the 870 Wingmaster.
Hope I could help.

Not that again…please don’t ask this or ak vs ar question.
Both are good guns. The 870 Wingmaster is a step up in the 870 over the cheaper 870 express.
You can get 7-8 round magazine in either. Barrels are short as 18"..but,they are only good for spray guns. Get a combo with 2 barrels so you have a good slug barrel. If not I DO recommend a choke system so you can hunt with it and shoot slugs too.
The 18" open bore or cyl bore is not really for hunting.
Both are good guns but,the wingmaster is top dog in looks and quality…but many do not have the extra long magazine or short barrel. So the express 870 should be fine.

The only shotgun to consider when it comes to defense is the Mossberg 500…..
Here are the technical reasons why……
http://jth8260.tripod.com/870.html
Yes the Remington 870 is a fine shotgun and I do own a couple for hunting and even a couple of defense models…. But if I ever needed a shotgun for defense only the Mossberg 500 is what I would grab…… I have had problems (no not major ones) but problems with shells not always ejecting or a jamb with the Remington 870 shotguns in rapid fire — The time for a jamb is not when a home invader is in your home…. My Mossbergs never give me any fail to feed, fire or eject issues… So overlook the complaints they don’t feel as heavy duty — they always work when it counts……
High Capacity?… That would be the Mossberg 500 20 inch barrel 12 gauge 8 shot persuader catalog # 50577…..

I own 2 of these and have put thru thousands of rounds thru them with no problems…. These have been a complete pleasure to own….
Look here at a few of my police type shotguns… As you can see I do have 2 Remington 870 7 shot synthetics (on the bottom)…. A Mossberg 930 SPX on top and the Mossberg 500 persuader in the 2nd position and a Mossberg 590 in the 3rd position….

Out of this bunch the Mossberg 500 and 590 have been the most problem free….
The Mossberg 590 in my opinion is the most reliable shotgun on the planet but I will say they are a bit overkill… The 500′s are fine… The 590′s are best for busting doors down in Iraq but for civilian use are a bit much – But if the best will do then get a 590….

Here’s another one of my 590′s…..
