Shotgun shell questions and other questions?

February 19th, 2010 by eranio

Don’t really know much about guns, but am not completely stupid. Well, I have a Charles Daly 12 gauge field version semi-auto shotgun and I know it is chambered for 3 inch shells. My question is, if I get a 3 1/2 shells, will they perform better and will the 2 3/4 perform less better then the 3 inch? Also, can I even shoot 3 1/2 and 2 3/4 shells in my gun, or is it not recommended to shoot either, just 3? Also the shotgun holds 4 shells total, maybe 5, just haven’t tried to push it in with force, but do they have tube extenders for semi-autos, especially for charles daly? Hear they are hard to find if they have any because they are marketed under a different name but is this gun similar to any brands that could have accessories for this gun? Thanks to all the answers!

I once worked for a small department, whose issue shotgun was in such poor condition, I used by modified Remington 1100. I had to qualify with it and when I got to the range, the range master had a bucket of loose shot shells. He wanted us to use them for the qualification because he had to use them up. All the of the shotguns being used fired the 2 3/4 shell, so no one checked the shells as we loaded up. I had the misfortune of firing first. He had several 3 inch mag. shells in the bucket. The round did chamber and did fire. It also locked my semi auto to the point I had to take to the local gunsmith for repair. I was lucky not to have blown the gun up and injure myself.

    Never exceed chamber length!

I’m not familiar enough with the Charles Daly to know if any of the other brands of extension tubes will fit this gun. If you know anyone with a Mossberg or Remington shotgun, you might ask them to let you try their tube on your shotgun to see if it fits. You might get lucky.

DO NOT attempt to fire 3 1/2" shotgun shells in a weapon chambered for 3". IF they do chamber then when they are fired you will have pressures spike well beyond what the shotgun is designed to handle.

That said you can fire any 12 gauge shotgun shells of 3" or LESS so 2 3/4" in you shotgun. SO this can save you a good deal on recoil and will also be easier on your wallet.

Not sure about what other design your Charles Daly might be based off of.

Don’t use a shell bigger than specified on the gun. It will not handle it. You can use anything 3" and smaller and there really isn’t a power difference by size unless specified like magnum shells.

NEVER ATTEMPT TO FIRE SHELLS LONGER THAN THE CHAMBER OF YOUR GUN!!!

it’s OK to shoot shorter shells though (i.e., in your case, your gun can handle 3" and 2.75", but NOT 3.5")

you can get magazine extension tubes, but i’ve never seen any for charley daly. usually only major names (like rem 870, moss 500, winchester SX3)
