If one has enough time to practice, is there any point of using buckshot instead of a heavy slug?

I don’t know what rounds to buy. I just bought a Mossberg 930 SPX.

Please give me advantages/disadvantages.

A) 0000 Buckshot

B) 00 Buckshot

C) A HEAVY slug (don’t know the names)

D) Other
By the way I mean self defense against human targets.

Not elephants, bears, lions, deer, etc.

Can shotgun ammo penetrate soft armor?

Ok, me and my friend know nothing about guns. We have only played them in video games.

Well, my question is, will a Remington 870 shooting 00 buckshot have more power than a Mossberg 590 shooting the same 00 buckshot?

My friend says he thinks the Remington 870 would have more power. I think the power would be the same because both are still shotguns.
gentlewolf, so the longer the barrel, is it weaker or more powerful?

I am a newbie when it comes to shotguns and after much reasearch I decided to go with a Mossberg Mav 88 with the 18.5 in barrel. I would like to know what sights are best for home defense. I have heard ghost ring sights, some say stick with the bead sight, I just thought I would ask and get some opinions. Thanks for your time
I did purchase a butt cuff and a 5 pack of 2 3/4 00 buckshot. That seemed to be the popular consensus from what I read.
StormGal or anyone else, where could I get a tritium front bead for my maverick 88?

buckshot out of it? The barrel states that it can can take up to 3 in shells. I have a bunch of super mag 00 buckshot and dont know if that is too much of a heavy load for the barrel. It still has the factory choke tube in it and im not sure what kind it is (modified, improved skeet). HELP!!
