I’ve decided to get a Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun. My primary purpose for this gun is to hunt deer. For my area I’m required to shoot a shotgun instead of a rifle. I would like to know if it’d be better to get a smooth barrel or a rifled one and the ammunition that be best for that type. Thanks in advance!

My grandpa is giving me his 1100 12 gauge and my dad might buy land by my house and it’s in a shotgun zone for deer hunting, and I want to know if I could get an interchangeable rifled barrel or if it would be eaiser to use rifled slugs or a muzzleloader.

I just bought a shotgun, a Mossberg 12 gauge. All I know about guns is very basic–I’m a decent shot and just a notice user, so I know about loading/unloading, a little about cleaning (now that I own my own I need to learn more), etc. All I have shot before is my dad’s old 12 gauge, so I’ve never bought a gun new. This may be a completely stupid question, but all the same I’d appreciate some info from people who know more than I do
I heard something moving back and forth when I lifted the bottom part of the gun (sorry I don’t know the technical terms, but what I mean is the big piece of the gun that’s separate from the barrel) to screw the barrel on. I held it down so the thing would slide forwards, and it’s a small wooden stick thing with two rubber circles on either end–again, it’s not in the barrel, it’s in the tube right below the barrel (magazine tube?). What is this little stick, and does it stay in the gun or not??? Again, sorry if this is a dumb, obvious question, but it’s not obvious to me so I thought I’d ask. Thank you in advance.
Thanks so much guys. I won’t be using mine for hunting either, just for fun shooting and home defense (though hopefully I never have to use it for the latter), so I’ll just take it out. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t removing some crucial piece that would cause it to fire incorrectly. Thanks again!

OK, I have narrowed my options down to:
Mossberg Silver Reserve Series Field 12 Gauge 2 O/U
Stoeger MODEL 2000 12 Gauge 0 Autoloader
Mossberg 930 All Purpose Field 12 Gauge 8 Autoloader
Could you also tell me why you chose the shotgun you did.
If anybody has any other ideas that cost under 0, that would be great

I don’t remember the model but what would a mossberg bolt action in 12 gauge run for?

I recently bought a box of ammo Remington 12 gauge Sport Shot for my shotgun.
What is Sport shot and how does it compare to Birdshot?

I think i would prefer a 12 gauge, but I am not set on it. I plan on using it to hunt pheasant. Also, I will plan on trap shootin as a hobby. I may even compete. Anyone think they can point me the right direction? Big 5 is having a sale on a mossberg 12 ga 590 for 369.99… are mossberg shotguns quality? They also have a remi 12 ga 7 shot for the same price. Either of these good deals? Thanks for the help!!!!

Howdy. I’m going to go deer hunting next year for the first time, so have plenty of time to get ready.
I checked out some shotguns my friend had. One was a 12 gauge which would be a little heavier than what I think I want. He suggested a 20 gauge, which I’ll take a look at at the store. He also uses sabot slugs though he said they cost a little more. Is there a huge difference between slugs?
I’ll take a hunting safety class too, so would it be better to wait until after that to buy a shotgun? Are there any times of the year when there are more specials on shotguns? There’s a sale at the outdoor store tomorrow, so I might buy the gun safe at the very least, which I want before bringing one home since we have children.
Are there any good books or websites to look at to research beforehand?
Thanks, I’ve been listening to my friends talk about hunting for years and it’ll be pretty exciting to bring home my own venison roasts and summer sausage for my family!
Thanks everyone, especially Gary. A metal gun cabinet sounds exactly like what I need. I’m not too worried about someone getting into the house and stealing things but wanted to have no way for the kids to get into it. And less expensive is good! I’ll check out those sites along with my state’s hunting seasons in case there’s an early deer hunt (I have a different buddy who may not mind me tagging along if that’s the case – it’d be a lot of fun to hunt with him, he’s older and knows all kinds of good stuff). Then will have a better idea of what I want before I hit the stores after Christmas.
Happy hunting to you all too!

My cousin is planning a Mountain Lion Hunting trip. He has a guy with a pack of dogs trained for hunting lions, taking him. He’s not sure what caliber gun he needs for the hunt. The guns he has are….
Remington and Marlin 22lr (We both agree that these guns would never do on a trip like this.)
Smith & Wesson .40 semi-auto handgun. (He’s thinking of taking this gun only as a back up.)
Ruger Hawkeye .204 bolt action rifle with a Leupold scope.
Remington 710 .300 Win. Mag. with 3-9×40 Bushnell scope.
Benelli Nova 12 gauge pump shotgun.
Which one of these guns would do for his trip? Or does he need another caliber gun for the hunt?
James S : You have been reported, don’t insult me or anyone else. By the way, its NOT illegal to hunt moutiain lions. Get your facts straight before you answer a question.
I should state that we live in Nevada, Where it is LEGAL to hunt mountain lions.
Forgot to mention, my cousin also has a Winchester Model 94 Ranger .30-30 lever action.

H&R PROTECTOR HOME DEFENSE SHOTGUN
18.5" Barrel
5 round capacity
Chambers 2 3/4" and 3" loads
Black synthetic stock with recoil pad and swivel studs
http://www.academy.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/outdoors/hunting/shotguns&start=0&selectedSKU=0350-02021-5180
This looks like a decent shotgun for home defense. I’ve looked in Pawn Shops, and I can’t find anything that would be decent for home defense. Mostly long and bulky guns, and their too much money. Does this look like a decent gun? I’m just trying to get people’s opinions.
I’ve also checked all the WalMart’s around my area and none of them sell guns.
I don’t want to buy a gun that’s going to fall apart on me, I just want something that I can throw in my closet if I need to use it in case of a home invasion, and something I can take to my Grandpas lakehouse in the woods every 2 years or so.
Thanks guys! Btw, is that gun a 12 gauge? How do I tell? By the chambers size?
Is H&R a good brand?
What type of shells should I buy for it that would be good for home defense?
If I could afford anymore I’d go with a remington or a mossberg, just don’t have the cash. I’m 21 and in college.
What specifically do I look for when buying shells? How do I know something is the size I’m looking for.
http://academy.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/outdoors/hunting/shotgun_ammunition
Those are the only ones that are offered at academy, would any of those be good or would it be better to get them from another shop?
Also, out of those 3 different types of shells from academy which would be the best for my needs.

The best I can think of it the benelli m2 or 3 convertible (semi auto and pump action).
The best gun I have for home defense is a .38 unless I have about a minute to spare to get to my 12 gauge
This isn’t call of duty, please break in to my house,I will show you what a real gun is

I was told that they would. If so, does it need to be the 12 gauge or 20 gauge stock?
