Shotgun Shells…. Too old?

April 29th, 2011 by eranio

I also have some shotgun shells purchased by my grandfather some 15 to
20 years ago (back when a box of buckshot ran .79 ) and was wondering
whether or not they were safe to use. I have newer ammo I use but I
also would like to know, because he did purchase a sizeable amount of said
ammo and it would save me a few dollars. Remington 12g Buckshot and
Turkey shots.

Also, does anyone know the value of a Remington 1100 12g shotgun from 1968 (VG condition)

Shotgun Ammunition Question: Different load sizes, load types etc? please explain to a beginner?

March 22nd, 2011 by eranio

I recently got my first shotgun, a Mossberg 500 combo.

I know the basics, the difference between a slug, buckshot and birdshot but want to know about the different types of these loads….
Give me an overview, what is 00 Buckshot? what is light target? what is the most powerful load of buckshot? the least powerful load? ditto for birdshot….
What type of slug is hardest hitting? is there a difference between lead and steel shot?
non lethal slugs? etc..
Any information on ammo types would be greatly appreciated.

(LOL, I went to the gun shop and bought Winchest AA 8-shot light target ammo… then realized is really not a good ammo for home defense.. so guide me in the right direction for Home Defense ammo type) thanks!
Hey thanks for all your help… The websites are great! It will be really tough deciding who gets best answer…
I live in a VERY crowded city, in an upstairs apartment, so I want something like 00 Buckshot I take it….. also it is a very ghetto city, hence why I bought the gun…
(I know, I know, move out of the ghetto right? Saving for a house/just graduated from college… so the ghetto area is my only option at the moment… lol)

First shotgun. What ammo to buy?

March 3rd, 2011 by eranio

So I’m buying my first shotgun, and I chose to buy the Remington 870 Express Synthetic.

So, now I need to know what kind of ammo to buy for practicing with it before hunting season comes around. And then what to buy when I do go hunting.

what does cylinder bore mean for a shotgun barrel?

December 31st, 2010 by eranio

this is specifically in reference to a barrel for the mossberg 835 listed on their website. I want a general purpose barrel that can shoot buckshot or slugs. my turkey barrel that it came with is…well… relatively worthless I have been told especially since i want to be able to shoot slugs.

what kind of ammo can I use through this type of barrel?

Which Remington should I choose for a shotgun?

December 27th, 2010 by eranio

I really like the Remington 870 marine magnum. In all the reviews ive seen it is a great shotgun. What shotgun do you think would be the best choice for a person looking for a Remington 870. Also what ammo would be good for target shooting and home defense. Is its shells 2 3/4 and 3?

How do you know if your shotgun is safe to shoot steel shot?

December 9th, 2010 by eranio

I have a Remington 870 Express, and live in good old California, and have to shoot nonlead ammo for upland game birds (California Condor Region), I know bismuth is OK to shoot, but what about all the others. That is if I am going to pay over .00 a shot at a quail, or a dove.

Another shotgun question for people who know more than me. Remington 870 Express Synthetic yes or no?

December 3rd, 2010 by eranio

I purchased a Remington 870 EXPRESS synthetic. The gun seems to work fine with new name brand ammo. However after reading lots of comments (which I wish I had done before I bought it) the Rem 870 Express seems to be the "low end" type shot gun. Was the Express a good buy or should I have gone with the more expensive Model 870 Marine Magnum *which is supposed to be smoother (action) due to the Electroless Nickel Plating. Many people seem to like Browning pumps and also many people say that the 870 POLICE is better than the Express. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My question is what is the length of the mossberg 500 with a 28” barrel and with a 18.5” barrel. it also needs to be a big enough bag so I can store my ammo, and stock because i will be switching out between a stock and a pistol grip on my shotgun so I would like to carry both. suggestions please?

Can a shotgun shell ever explode in your hands?

November 8th, 2010 by eranio

I was at the range today with my shotgun.
The ammo got blocked in the chamber several times. I got freaked out to insert my fingers into the chamber and unblock the shell…

Also, when pushing in the 6 ammo into the magazine, can the shells explode in your hands?

Can you buy rifle/shotgun ammunition if you're under 18?

October 18th, 2010 by eranio

I’ve been shooting for quite some time now, as much of my family grew up around guns. I’m 16, but I’ve bought ammo before at gun shows and such, although that was for my nagant. My brother recently bought me a 20 gauge, but I currently only have pheasant shot for it.

In short, can I go to Wal-Mart and buy slugs, although I’m not 18?

Thanks guys.
I live in Florida.

What is the cheapest gauge of shotgun to buy shells for?

October 14th, 2010 by eranio

I am considering getting a shotgun for recreational shooting and as a frugal (cheap and/or broke) person one of my primary concerns is the cost of ammo. I don’t care for any special kind, just generally the cheapest for basic buckshot and slugs. Thank you.

Shotgun for Summer, and everything else, Mossberg vs Remington and other?

August 22nd, 2010 by eranio

I’m thinking about getting a new/ good condition shotgun over the Summer, shotguns are the one thing me and my father don’t have many of, maybe only 3 or more, the ones I know of are a double barrel break action 20 gauge, a long barreled goose 12 gauge and one other which I’ve forgotten what it was. So I’ve decided by the end of Summer I should pick one up. I want something for just walking around in the woods, maybe home defense and SHTF "hey, you never know" I want a pump action, synthetic stock to start with, 12 gauge shotgun, I’ve looked at the Mossberg 500 and Rem 870 and I know there’s a lot of debates over them, and I’m not asking for that, just what you guys think of them, I want something to that has a lot of capacity, I’m not much of a shotgun man so I know every little about models, I also want one with out an internal choke so I can shoot slugs out of it, but possibly an adapter at the end to install one. And if any of you could give me almost a full review of any guns that might suit my needs would be amazing. Sorry if anything may sound novice level but like I said, I’m not a shotgun man, I just learned how a choke worked a few days ago. Thanks. Price isn’t a major deal but let’s try to keep it as low as possible.
I looked on Gunbroker and it looks like I’d be paying from 0-0 for a Mossberg 500
Yes I know this question has been brought up so much, too bad, but I’m not asking Vs of the two, just your thoughts and/or any other models, I’m not asking for self def so relax, but a high cab, pump action, reliable shotgun.
With as much capacity as I can possibly get out of a pump action, tube feed shotgun.
I think I’m leaning towards the Mossberg 500 or 590, but ammo’s a b!@#$ so I’ll have to find the best deal I can.

July 4th, 2010 by eranio
